Planning a trip to South Aus next year. Part of the route we are interested in, is across Hindmarsh Island then down what seems to be a road across the Mundoo Is barrage then south east beside the Tauwitchere Channel to Campbell Park.
Have had a look on Google Earth and can't quite make out if there is a road pavement across the Tauwitchere barrage.
Can anyone advise whether this is a trafficable road and is there a permit required for entry south of Mundoo Is.

Hi Bushtrek,

There is a RD across the Tauwitchere barrage, but the last time I checked it was still only open to workers. I can find out for sure tomorrow, as I have a mate that lives down there.

Thanks Blaze,
Appreciate if you could let me know if it's open.

Have this morning done some more research, and have been told it is accessible for "Operational reasons only".
I think that is a gentle way of saying it is not open to the public.

Will enquire of the National Heritage Trust as I was also advised the barrages are heritage listed.

Many thanks to all for the advice

Just spoke to him and I didn't mention in the last reply but his wife works for National Parks and they can't even get access to them.....So in short the only way to the mouth is along the coast.

Cheers Mate

Hi Bushtrek

We followed tracks all over the place trying to get close to the barrages around the mouth of Murray area. On Hindmarsh, there was a track which tourist operators were taking to one of the barrages (i think this also route drove across the barrage), but the gate was signed as no entry for anyone else - this may be the one you are asking about. I don't know who you would ask for permission. I can't find the map i was using on Hindmarsh - i must have had a brochure.

No much help, am i?

hi bushtrek,
i enquired about this a couple of years ago with the national parks office in Meningie and there is a road but not public access.

a run i have done a few times is worth the effort is salt creek to kingston along the beach, i,ve also been to the murry mouth from salt creek another good experience but you have to return to salt creek so a bit of time needed.

regards peter

I assume you mean the barrage at the mouth of lake Alexandrina that feeds into the Coorong?

If that's the case you can't use it. I decided to go for a walk along it one day, just for pleasure, and was promptly told to get off by some blokes in work gear.

Hi Bushtrek

No you cant cross the barrages, and the only way to get there is a 90k run up the beach from the 42 mile crossing, BUT it is a very tough beach at times as the sand covers the seaweed.
A well set up light 4wd with several other 4 wd with you is the only way, and allow at least an overnight stay and PLENTY of fuel.
I know locals who have made it and plenty that have not.
When you get there you have to walk the last 5 ks also as the govt in its wisdom of doing the right thing by its tax payers, has fenced it off 5 k short of the mouth.
I havent been on the hindmarsh island side, but sounds like the best spot for a look anyway.
Also the beach is closed for a period each year from Tea Tree crossing up, so the plovers can have sex on the beach!!!
You will need to check with nat parks to find out when this is, i think its around october november , but not 100% sure.

Cheers Pesty

you can drive to the mouth along the beach from Goolwa Beach. There is no access across the barrages from Hindmarsh Island. On Hindmarsh Island you can get to a point where the mouth can be seen and walk from there to pretty close given that the Murray can basically be waded across at the end.

The run from Goolwa beach is very easy, particularly if you drop tyre pressures a tad. Probably about 20 mins at an easy pace.

As others have said it is accessable from 42 mile crossing to the other side. This is much longer, often harder (lower pressures are a must and last time if I didn't have the winch and spare to bury I might still be on the beach). I seem to remember it may also be closed at certain times of the year (wildlife breeding or something?)

Cheers
Trevor

I'm not very clever at this photo bucket stuff, but i will try and post pics of the Mouth of Murray from across the Coorong, and as close as we got to the barrage on Hindmarsh looking over the locked gate. If it doesn't work, some genius here may fix it for me.
