As I have just purchased a second hand Jayco Discovery, 17ft, single axle, I now need to fit an electric brake controller to my 2001 Triton MK, before I can pick the van up from Vic. I have never had electric brakes, only hydraulic overiders. Any members ideas or recommendations would be most welcome. Do you need to be a rocket scientist to fit one yourself, or should I leave it to the experts. Have had a local quote for $330 fitted, don't know what brand.

Not rocket science to fit. I had a Voyager and was fine but I now have a Prodigy and it is by far a lot better unit. You don't have to fiddle with trying to setup the unit as much.

The Tekonsha Prodigy seems to be head and shoulders above the rest, (but I believe Tekonsha is putting out another new one). About $150 on Ebay and other
places if you look hard enough. I paid an Auto Elec about $80 to fit it and I thought that was good value.

G'day Fred
Go with the Prodigy. Easy to fit - hardest thing for me was finding a spot for the unit.
Have a look at post 51595 and buy from Derek - excellent service (bloody quick,
well packaged against damage) and if you have any hassles he's more than willing to help.
Cheers from the Moose

Thanks for the info guys. I have never bothered much with them as I have never had electric brakes, but I have seen many good reports about the Tekonsha prodigy, and as always, its best to be guided by those who know. I need one pretty quick, so I'll take your advice there Moose, and check it out. Cheers and beers from Fred.

That's right what the others have said. Prodigy is best by far. Easy to fit by anyone who can hold a screwdriver and soldering iron.

Hi Fred...
Most or all break contolers have one wire that T's into the foot peddle switch (the side that has no 12v until you push the peddle..... 1 that runs to the pos side of the battery through a 15amp circuit breaker.... 1 that runs to ground and the 1 that runs to pin 5 on your trailer plug... Easy as to install and as I do them for a living (amoung other things).. $330 for a unit and fitting is about fair money....

I have fitted many of these brake controllers. It's a piece of cake but if you find that you are having trouble with the red wire to your brake switch you can always run it to your trailer plug stop light connection (No. 6 on a seven pin round plug).
I have found that it is of an advantage to fit spade connections to the controller cables (at the controller) for easy removal and replacement of the controller
