Hurricane Lanterns, where can you get them?

Remember the old Hurricane Lantern?

People actually used them for lighting. Used to fill the tank with Kero, pop up the glass and light the wick. They had a knob on them to adjust the wick length so that you could vary the lighting from extremely dull to very dull.

Anyway, I reckon they'd be a handy item these days at the campsite. Use Citronella oil instead of Kero. Keep the bugs away and offer a little light.

Jim.

Most camp shops have them.

I use one at home and when away.

The C-oil smokes up the glass but a quick wipe and good as new.

Derek,

I haven't seen them for years. Mustn't be looking hard enough LOL

Does the lantern let out enough smoke to keep the nasties away?

Jim

What have been around 2nd hand shops lately are the old lanterns that they use to use at road works, the ones with the red and green , some with clear glass.

Usually only about $5.00 ea.

They are a good talking point as well.

They don't smoke if you keep the flame low.

Yes the oil does help with the nasties.

Hi All,
Genuine "Hurricane" lamps/lanterns are a rarity now, most are found in trendy homes or in Ye Olde Antique Shoppe's in yuppy suburbs.
If you can find a genuine article (except down the back in Granpa's shed) you are bloody lucky.

Most of those in Camping shops etc are relatively poor chinese copies, they work but do not match the originals for quality or even light output. Not that the genuine article could ever be considered a bright light.

For those of us who grew up in the days of the dunny down the back fence, the Hurricane was the only source of light for the midnight call of nature that couldn't be relieved at the lemon tree. It was usually kept alight all night just outside the back door and only turned out in the morning.

Who else can remember those times.

Cheers

Disco.

I have a cheap Chinese one. $7 if I remember and 5 years old now and still on the same wick. It has some rust on the lower edge but works great.

Don't ask about the Tilly Lantern as you will get abused.

We used to use them years ago while night fishing to keep the mozzies and what ever away.

The Eveready have done away with a lot of the old time stuff.

We seen some at an auction a few months ago but didn't wait around to see what they fetched.

Try a Google on them, see what you come up with.

Now things are looking up eh , you went and done some research , OK now look at the text under the heavy blue text and see how it's proper name , Now you see why I said it don't exist ....oh and don't believe what Poms tell you/

Tilley Lamp or Lantern

Now that you have been educated on that subject all messages to you will cease until you start acting like an adult and actually ask some good questions and or make sensible answers.

I missed your point. Sorry about the spelling.

We used both the Tilley and Hurricane in the bush when I was growiing up, which probably explains why I'm half blind now.

My wife still has her Grandmothers glass bottomed lantern. We keep it filled with citronella and occasionally light it for "mood" lighting. One night about 20 yrs ago we turned all the lights out and tried to eat dinner by it to show the kids how people used to live. Bad idea. Could not see a bloody thing.

The point is the spelling ,
The Tilley Lamp derives from John Tilley’s invention of the hydro-pneumatic blowpipe in 1813. W.H.Tilley were manufacturing pressure lamps at their works in Stoke Newington in 1818, and Shoreditch in the 1830s. It's correct name is Tilley, not Tilly , I know it's only a small technicallity but that's the facts.
Tilley Lamp

You see this bloke I been ...well not exactly arguing with, it might look that way to you but to me it's been a bit of entertainment after he made the big statement that he would surely know more than I ever would about Wide Loads , very funny really , because he went in full bore and made a real goose of himself , a white Ant chippee saying that to someone with 30 years truck driving , with 9 of those years hauling wide loads and 5 years escorting wide loads , All I did was tried to help him with a bit of knowledge, well it seems he cant handle being made for what he is and has to make stupid remarks about people trying to make himself look good and the further he goes the worse he looks , all you have to do is trawl back through his posts over the last week and you will see what I and others mean .Pathetic.

I too have been offline for a few weeks. Nothing as much fun as a winter trip just had the head in the books for a while. Now that is out of the way I can get back into the serious stuff.

Anyway didn't see your original post but a couple of things that may help.

Firstly as an alternative to kero I have used citronella in a hurricane lamp. Works a treat and helps to keep the bugs at bay. May not work in the old tilly but.

The other thing that might help you get the kero you are after. The Missus uses a lactose reduced milk that used to be very hard to get. We asked at our local supermarket and they were happy to get it in for us as long as we would buy a whole box. We were and they did. The guy was a bit cunning though and he got a second box that they put on the shelves and it sold like hot cakes. Now since then we have moved and the lactose reduced stuff is like flies on a dead roo but I'm sure you can see where I'm going here. Go to your local IGA or similar the big chains probably won't want to know you.

Good luck

Hi all,

We just got back from our winter trip so I've been off line for a few weeks, although having had a quick look at last few pages it seems like there has been plenty of the usual action.....

You may remember a few weeks ago I was asking about where I could get some decent Kero for the old Pressure Lamps I was resurrecting having discovered some of the dark blue stuff is not up to the job in a lantern of this type. The thread seemed to take off in all directions and ended up covering Carbide, Shellite, how to light a Tilly, Carbide as expanding bait etc tec. All good fun but still no wiser on the Kero.

You can still buy Made In China Hurricane lamps for only a few dollars in the Reject Shops and Bargain shops. They look fine and you'll get a Summer out of them. Then they'll rot or rust away. Most camp shops have the real ones. I had a Tilley Lamp in the late 50's early 60's and it was a beauty. The only hassle was carting fuel and the metho for priming. Back then I went fishing/camping by train and pushbike. I've still got two Coleman lamps that work the same as the Tilleys. Also got two old kerosene single burner pressure stoves. They all just live in the shed now.Cheers.

Have a few tin sheds on a camping block (90 mile beach vic)
you need a fire going to keep the mossies at bay (bit of smoke )
Keep the kero lanterns on very low 24hrs ,extremely economical.
Amazing that no mossie will enter the door or the many roof gaps whilst the lamp is on. Citronella much the same but smells more.
Dont carry so much on vehicle camping trips now due to the fuel and we escape inside our van when mozzies pounce if theres no fire on.
