I know how industrious and clever all you lot are so thought I would ask this to find out who has done it.
I seen a camper van similar to the Jayco Swan campers etc that had a 12 volt powered wind up mechanism fitted so you did away with the manual hand winding. Now as I seen it on the net as a for sale item (the van that is), I never got all the details on how the old guy built it. Apparently it could work manual or powered. He was going to let me in on his secret but in the end he didnt bother.
As I have hurt my back, and since I love my Swan camper van and the mods I have done, I would love to know if someone else has done this too and wants to let me in on all the details on how to build/convert
mine over.
Surely there has got to be more than one guy in the whole of Oz thats done it. And surely I am not the only bloke who seen one, or thought about one and wanted one.
Thanks Mick

Hey Mick!
Is it possible to fit a driver to a decent size cordless drill? Charge it up off the vehicle battery, ready for next time.
Regards,
Laurie.

thanx laurie
a cordless drill set up wont work due to the weight of the roof setup. thanks anyway
i know there would be a way to do it as you only got to convert the similar method of unwrapping a camper trailer and they have plenty of weight and travel required for the unit to flip over.
thanx anyway mick

What about one of those 12v tyre wrenches (Shentia impact wrench)
Cheers Kev

Hi, Jayco used to have the option of manual or electric wind -up mechanism. Being lazy, I inquired on choice when we got our Finch only a year ago and was that told they no longer install electric as there was no end of problems with them.
Maybe you could call Jayco faactory in Vic and find out if this was true and/or if you can purchase an electric device to fit yourself.

Hi Allan
Me too please. I've been looking at replacing the winch with an electric boat winch but most of them are freewheeling out.

hey boc what ever happened to reading the whole question before answering it? as i said, the one i have seen could work in either mode - manual or powered. that i presume caters for those circumstances you mention.
thanks for your input though. it is something that i am sure someone hasn't thought of before when doing something similar.
i was thinking of an external power unit with a square arm off it that fits into the slot where the winder goes. so being external and portable keeps it simpler. then powering it off the back of the car via a trailer plug or similar. i think that would work as if there is an elec fault then, you would be pretty buggered with the car staying pretty
well put. and if you wanted to you could just stick the normal winder arm in the slot and off you go.
as i said before i am just thinking ahead as i have an injured back which limits me. so anything that can make it a little easier would be good. dont want to change vans as this one suits our other needs and is so roomy for the 5 of us and great airflow for those hot days/nights.
thanks for your thought cheers mick
