I'm doing my first on the Patrol and had a look in the handbook. It says use W5-30......does that sound right?
I thought that would be real thin oil you would use in small engines?
The other question is does everybody use genuine Nissan parts like oil filter or are after market filters good enough?
I knew my Landcruiser but now trying to learn the Patrol.
Thanks
Reiner

good point. I went to Nissan and bought all the filters there. Hardly any more expensive than.
Not worth taking a risk.
I did oil cnages on my HJ47 every 5000km ( incl filters) it has done over 800.000km and is still running.
Thanks

I use 15W40
Mobil Delvac in the 4.2 at present.
I use genuine Nissan Fuel filter and Ryco Oil Filters and Air Filter
Seems to work OK
Getting a bit slack with the 5000km changes but 6,500 to 7.500 is OK I think
Cheers

Hi,
I use Nissan filters as they are about the same price from memory.
As for oil, on another
forum a year or so ago there was a lot of talk about oil - our old style 4.2s get very hot, and some types of lubricants are better at handling the heat than others. Oil that has a high calcium lubricant content is best (>3000ppm)
Castrol JMax 15w40 meets the above specs (the J stands for Japanesse), although castrol have renamed it from Jmax, but its the same gear.
The other view is that any oil is good as long as you change it often - I always stick to the 5000 change, even though that sometimes means changing oil once a month when getting about lots.
there is a yahoo
forum for patrols that is very good if you want to know more about your ute

The handbook says that?
All the hanbooks i have seen give a chart showing what viscosity to use depending on operating temps

The handbook I got was printed in 2005 and it says "5W-30 is preferable. If 5W-30 is not avaiable selct the viscosity from the chart"
Technical Information Page 9-5

I think that quoted oil rating is for very cold winter conditions. Your handbook gives a range of ratings for different conditions.
I use 15W-40
Caltex Delo CXJ (J for Japanese engines). It's a medium-ash oil specifically made for Japanese-design engines.

I use Castrol Tection (old name J-Max) 15W-40.
As for oil/fuel/air filters I use either genuine or Ryco (depending on where the best saving are!! ;-) ) and except for one instance some time back with genuine oil filters when it took ~ 6 secs to reach oil pressure after startup have had no probs with either.

It would be nice if the new Patrols had oil pressure gauges too but no such luck.
Water temp is all you get.
