We have a jayco dove offroad camper with 2 water tanks. It is very frustrating to fill as the inlet to the tanks are on the bottom of the tank. Is this normal? I have removed one tank in an attempt to turn it the other way up but it will mean that there is no drain point, also the outlet sits up about 50mm from the (new) bottom. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Craig

I think you have a problem. I've never heard of this sort of installation on any camper van.

Might be a good idea to ring Jayco.....something does'nt sound right.

Briggzee,

From my experience the caravans and campers that I have owned are relatively slow to fill.

Inlets on the bottom of the side of the tank are reasonably common and most are around 25-30mm diameter.

A few things to check out.

1.Are the breather/overflow outlets blocked. These are usually on top of the tank and dribble when the tank is full.

Do the tanks have breathers lines fitted. Probably not.

I made up my own using PVC trickle fittings, plastic hose and high grade sikaflex (not any old silicone ) I used a Ryco universal fuel filter at the open end to keep out bugs, dust etc.
These help to speed things up but the tanks have to come out to fit them. They are 12.5mm plastic hose and have a filter of some sort on the open end. This end must be fixed at least 150mm above the top of the tank

2. What size filler hose is fitted and what diameter tank inlet, the tank inlet is the limiting factor.
Anything under 25mm will be slow

Not much else I can suggest

Ryco filter is the plastic in-line variety.

Disco, the filler hose is approx 25mm and the tanks do have a breather line fitted which goes up and finishes next to where the filler hose is. I have spent a bit of time straightening out the breather hose to try and avoid water blockages. The filler hose on the bottom doesnt seem to make sense as the incoming water has to "push" up the water in the tank? I cant see any other way so I'll have to perservere and hope that the tanks are full. Thanks

Craig

It's a bit hard to picture what's going on, but try this.

Disconnect the nozzle off the garden hose and place the hose at least 100mm below the breather then fill the tank.

Let us know how you get on.

Briggzee,
not sure if it will help but is worth a try.
Disconnect the power to the pump and leave the tap turned on and this might let the air pressure out of the tank while filling.

Hi Craig

I never fill my twin tanks from the filler cap.

I have fitted valves between them on both inlet and outlet so I can use them one at at time. This also prevents you loosing all your water if one gets a leak.

I pressure fill my tanks one a a time from the drain tap until the water starts flowing from the over flow. This way I get 2 full tanks with no air lock.

Derek.

Hi Derek
I have same prob as Craig so will try your tip
But I also cannot get rid of plastic taste in the water and I use a food grade hose and have flushed both tanks several times with bi carbonate soda after letting it soak for a few days but still the bad taste, any suggestions?
Cheers Ray

Hi
briggzee
It is possible that the vent lines going back up to the filler have a slight bend in them and are filled with water that will give a restriction for filling. Have two tanks on my caravan and one fill point have both bleeds hooked together and have no problems filling tanks. Both tanks inlets are pipes halfway up tank. Breather lines are dripper tube have dripper filter to stop bugs ect entering system.
Cheers

Or they could be like mine were and have a kink in the filler tube.
Only found it when putting a hatch in the side of the van. One tube was virtually blocked and that tank was actually gravity filling off the second one. Might be worth a look at the pipes if you can see all of them.
