We are planning to spend more time off road
camping and beach fishing and have ben told a solar panel approx 90 watt and 40lt Engels would be a good set up.
My question; are there good and not so good models of this freezer to look out for? can't afford a new one unfortunately.
Thanks in anticipation.
Tom

Tom,
They are all pretty good, but try and get a newer one (40 L and not the older 39L) The newer ones are also a
grey colour and not the cream and green ones. There is quite a few on Ebay ATM that are good value
Cheers Kev

Tom,
Yep, there are good and average models. The last letter of the model number tells you its vintage.
The original 39litre A-series (up to about 1991) was very good but drew up to 4.5 amp hours. The more "economical" B-series replaced it (consumption about 3.5 Ah). These were beige.
The first of the
grey model (E-series) is to be avoided - high power consumption, and may have had some reliability probs.
The best model is the 40litre F-series, which has been around for about 5 years now - power consumption is no more than 2.5 amp hours. Great fridge.

Hi Tom
I agree with the 40 ltr Engel, great unit and goes
well with an 80 watt panel and a good quality deep cycle battery, if you are having trouble finding the right fridge I would also recommend an Ever Cool fridge freezer.
Good luck

Hi Tom
We bought a 2nd hand 40 litre Engel (as our son had our 30 litre one at the time). Our 80w panel on the roof of the canopy kept the deep cycle battery fully charged most of the time, as
well as running two 12 v fluro lights. It wasn't fine all the time either. We will try adding our smaller Engel as a freezer next trip, and see how we go.
