Hi all,
Our 80 series diesell manual has developed backlash in the transmission during gear changes. I have had the rear propellor shaft overhauled but the fault is still there. Is it likely to be the coupling between the gearbox and the transfer case? I have looked at the archives and it seems to be a possible. The motor is a 1HZ with turbo fitted, an H150F box and a HF1A t/case.
Any advice on the problem is very welcome.(except "sell it and buy a Nissan!!".
Thanks, Ian

If yours is a constant 4WD it is a common problem with them. When mine got real bad it turned out to be all the splines in the front diff and axel - they had worn considerably to a point instead of a flat top, so I had to have been replaced.

Fixed 80% of the problem but it is still there.

You could also offroad80s.com someone there may also be able to help.

It is a part time 4wd so the front driveline is not applicable as it gets so much less use but thanks anyway.

Hi Ian

I have the same set-up and I would have gone the tail shaft as well. I would get under the vehicle in 4 wheel drive with the hubs locked and in gear and see if you can move the shaft and see if the front one moves the same and also if there is any play in the diff, if all that is good it does not really matter what it is as you will have to pull the box out anyway. Once out you will want to do everything you can anyway.

Have fun

Its the constant 4wd thing...it can be "fixed" by changing it to lockable hubs . costs about $1000....not worth it IMHO....We had no idea in our 80 what it was when we got it...

when you change gears try playing the clutch real smoothly and ...let it half out then do it slowly the rest of the way...

I can change gears in ours without making the noise / clunk all the time....

if this isnt the rpob then good luck!!

G’day!
Have similar problem. When fitted rear diff-lock I have change all bearings in rear diff and set correct backslash because mine was *WAY* out of specification. This helps enormously, but it still here. Situation also has improved when I fitted new clutch (before diff-locks). I recon it is all pieces that counts due to age of your car. Eventually I have learned to change gear in such a way that it unnoticeable.
If yours really annoys you, I would check backslash in rear diff first.
Cheers
Serg.
