This is probably best answered by Dr Canvas Tent, but all opinions are welcome.

Antiseptics come in all sorts of varieties, but some of the old tested and tried ones are being poven to work as well as any modern treatments; eg "Betadine" which is nothing more than Iodine that has been around longer than Grandpa's Axe.

I've had a couple of open wounds on my back and today got out the Hydrogen Peroxide and Jenny administered it. This was based on the recommendation some years back of a Plastic Surgeon mate of the Old man.

Works a treat, dries the wound as well as disinfecting it.

I'm going to pack it in the First Aid Kit.

Jim.

Here's some I got from my sister.

Home Remedies
Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear... Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Kills fleas instantly... Dawn dishwashing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Did You Know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-- even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine ther apy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer . If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Smart splinter remover. Just ! pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure ...cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters... To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine. D0C@cˆa powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises ... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief... It's not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

If you send this to 10 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was worth it.

"drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."

- drinking two glasses of water will usually relieve headache pain. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of headache.

- I get strange looks when I tell my mates I keep my own bottle of clear nailapolish in the workshop.

Just a few notes of caution.

Hydrogren Peroxide was used in plastic surgery to debride (clean up) wounds anad minimize scaring. Not used in now - may cause cancer - lots of free radicals and oxidixzing agents.

Do not put anything on burns! Other than cool, clean running water. Butter is a no no - too much salt and causes cell damage. Also when the appropriate aid is administered - how do you think they will clean the would? Toothpaster etc has to be scubbed out! Try it sometime on an open wound. Also toothpaste is no sterile...you risk infecting the burn site.

The rest are pretty much harmless...I can't speak for your cats or dogs. Some are common sense.

Listerine kills most things its activtive ingrediant is EOOH (alcohol).

The flyspray is another version of the old kero flyspray...it disolves the waxes lining the insects breathing tubes.

The Alka-seltzer is sort of right and could work...see doctor is the smarter option. Too much is definitely not good for you.

In all, I think apart from the above mentioned the worst is it will work...or you'll like like goose with your hands wallowing in cold porridge.

Again...Do not put toothpaste on any type of burn.

Haven't heard of it causing cancer. But what hydrogen peroxide does do is kill tissue, all tissue. It kills new granulating skin cells that are necessary to heal wounds. It also damages small superficial blood vessels that are needed to supply the new skin cells with blood.

New skin cells should be encouraged to grow and multiply with regular cleaning and new dressings, not killed with peroxide.

My children say i have 3 cures, depending on what it is

Put Betadine on it

Gargle with salt and water (or as a mouthwash for gum infections and ulcers)

Have a cool shower

What ever they have, one of these will work.

Hi Motherhen,

I find betadine a poor cousin to Pure Iodine.
The ol skin isnt as tough as it used to be and i can fiddle with wound healing for weeks, but 3 days of Iodine and it clears up straight away.
It was off the market for about 12 months but have recently managed to get some more

Hope all is going OK over there, do you ever see Ernie and Sonya these days?

Cheers Pesty

I have a fourth one - how could i forget telling them to - Have a drink of water.

Hi Pesty

Ernie shore for us this Spring, but they have sold their place and are moving nearer to Perth.

Ah Iodine in any form. The liquid stuff works wonders. Some years ago my younger son had a motor bike, and elder son came home for semester break and wanted to use it to take his brother to the school bus stop. Younger son said no, but big brother followed the car on the bike anyway. Bend in gravel road, and no sign of son following on bike. On the way back i found he'd flipped it when braking for the bend, and skidded on the gravel on all sides. He still tells his mates that i grinned as i applied the liquid Betadine. A lesson well learnt.

Hydrogen peroxide is no longer used by hospitals. As an initial would antiseptic betadine or dettol works well, but don't leave it on wounds, wash it off.

I have people coming into my Emergency Department putting all sorts of things on wounds, because a mate of a mate's grandma once did it. Needless to say the wounds look terrible. After a couple of days of cleaning it in the shower, or using sterile saline, and a new dressing every day, the wounds look 10 times better.

For burns with some broken skin then cool, running water is best. After the victim is more comfortable put glad wrap over the area and go to a hospital.

Jim I would suggest you get put some sterile saline, lots of clean dressings and some glad wrap in your first aid kit instead of hydrogen peroxide.

Barnesy,

We used saline and dressings for the first 16 days, wounds were slow to dry out and one in particular remained very weepy and wet. The peroxide in 2 days has vastly improved it.

Do you know why hospitals have stopped using peroxide, I'm assuming they have researched it.

New skin cells should be encouraged to grow and multiply with regular cleaning and new dressings, not killed with peroxide.

If a wound is weeping and is too moist then it needs a different dressing on it. An absorbent type dressing.

There are a whole range of different dressings designed for all types of wounds in varying stages of healing.

Jimbo, if you have a wound that isn't healing well, then I would suggest to seek medical advice on the best dressing to use.

Be very careful with Hydrogen Peroxide it is a powerful oxidising agent and will and can cause serious burns. Before using it as an antiseptic or wound wash it has to be diluted to a maximum concentration of 3% Hydrogen Proxide, even this strength can cause problems on sensitive skin. One use my mother used it for was to remove ear wax, a couple of drops of 3% peroxide and a plug of cotton wool and the wax is all dissolved, sure beats poking around will cotton buds.
