I seem to be having a problem with my wheel lugs, especially some closed ones. They seem to keep loosening. What could be the problem?

Do you have alloy or steel rims ?
Do you know that there are different types of nuts used on each of these wheel rims.

US steel wheels. One thing also is that the lugs seem shorter compared to the OEM wheels.

And nuts - where they come from? I am trying to say the same what Kiwi - there are differenet nuts for different rims. Try standard "open" nuts and see if you have a difference.

Lawrence
It could be that the closed ended nuts are not allowing the nut to screw fully on and is coming up onto the stud end, especially if the wheels are not standard, get a set of open nuts . \I think K.S.V might be heading the right way too,

I thought about this, Doug, but he says that they get loosed, and he did not said that he cannot tide them properly.
Cheers

Yes, Doug T. I agree with what you said about the closed lugs not tightening properly because of their length. They are almost twice as long as the open lugs. I will get some more of the open lugs to replace them tomorrow. Thanks for all the responses

Nissan Patrol gq. Open end nuts fit perfectly (even though further out on the studs than with the oem wheels), so dont think its a Nissan issue.

Just to be sure !

Can you recognise the differance between nuts for an alloy rim and a steel rim ?

Alloy wheel nuts are stepped with a flat collar like a big washer on the wheel end.

Steel rim nuts are tapered (cone) shape at the wheel end.

My mechanic tightened them and not a peep since, except for the back which was making an awful racket. Turns out that the back wheels werent sitting properly since they were a tad bit too small for the centre piece on the drum (108 mm centre). To make it worse I had put on the centre piece that came with the wheels, which helped make the racket. So I am going to machine out the centres to 112 as per the oem wheels.
