Anybody
hazard a guess as to why someone would always travel Nth - Sth on the CSR in preference to Sth - Nth "for at least 4 reasons"? The 4 reasons weren't given.

We did a North South back in '94
This turned out to be the harder way as the track follows along each dune corridor and then crosses over the dune at the given point. The trouble is that a sudden left hand turn is needed to get the run up over the dune and in the turn there is normally a lot of soft sand. Even with skinny tyres down to 15psi I had trouble on some dunes. At many of these left hand turns there a run-up from the opposing dune which has been made by previous travellers
Have done two other partial treks along the CSR towing a trailer and heading South North and the going was fairly easy by comparison as the approach to a dune crossing is normall head on.
Don't know the other 3 reasons.....lol
Cheers

George,
We did from
Well 33 south last August, and thought it looked easier from the north.
Why? Because the vast majority of traffic was from the south, and they scalloped and chewed up the approaches. The north faces of the dunes were smooth.
The sharp turns at the bottom of the dunes were OK - again we were running 18-20psi to make it all easy, and I think my TD has a few more herbs than Willem's........ LOL

Yep, nursery slopes and corrugations :-)) Save the rest for another trip!
Little wonder why your FJ55 did OK - it had more power and torque than your Patrol! They were a good truck - just a pity they rusted out.

We did it nth to sth in 92, as Phil said the approaches while they have a bend at the bottom were much smoother back then. Hate to think what they are like these days on the southern approaches.

another reason we did north south (in ,98) apart from the slope being easier was if you finish with a vehicle thats not quite as
well as when you started its a lot closer to
perth from
wiluna than
halls creek
cheers rod

we are planning to do nth - sth in 09...why? i cannt remember if it cos we are saving the best part (
views) to the end or seein g them at the start!
maybe too that it could be easier for us to go that way to get home and fuel up, meet up with others etc too....

Travelling south the sun tends to be behind you so there is less squinting and the
views have more light.

Ive also heard that the corrogations are more severe at the northern end and that its better to
cook your shocks at the end of the track than at the start.
Makes a bit of sense I suppose.
Cheers....Lionel.

I did North to South in 2005 as said less glare, less damage on dunes and when you finish the CSR you then do the Gunbarrel.
No problems at all.

Did the CSR from north to south in Sept 2007. We thought it looked easier from north to south as the dunes appeared to be rougher from the other direction. However, vehicles we passed travelling south to north believed that was the easier direction.
In Sept when it was very hot, having the sun beating thro' the windscreen every day for a couple of weeks would have made the south/north trip very uncomfortable.
