Living in the N.T. you don't need a license for a boat or Boat rego, So if I travel interstate, do I need to have rego for the boat and a boat license.
Intend to travel to QLD, NSW, maybe VIC and SA.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Steve.

Steve,
At a guess I would say when in Rome you have to do as the Romans do. I don't think they the authorities would let you get away with it. If its any help I whave a boat and a licence and I wouldn't charge you very much. LOL
I probably haven't been much help.

In South Australia you will need a the boat to be registered, the boat trailer to be registered(unless you are using a cartopper) and you will need to have a boat drivers licence. I looked into this once and decided I don't need a boat...lol

For visitors to South Australia...
I'm not that clear that the boat trailer needs to be registered so long as it didn't need to be registered in the state you are coming from...
But, the boat needs to be registered, and the operator
needs to be licensed.
If you come from Victoria, you are not allowed to drink our beer.

Shhhh... don't tell the Vics... they think the only beer we have here is West End - but that is a Lion Nathan (Vic) product - of course we drink Coopers.

In NSW if the boat is capable of 10 knots or more (usually taken as more than a 6hp motor) the vessel must be registered and the operator Licensed.

a driver of a boat can drive any size boat they want without a licence in NSW. There is a catch though, you do not need a licence to drive the boat under 10 knots. Which is generally a speed that produces no wash.

I think that it would be better if you were to contact the motor vehicle registry in each state that you are planning to travel through, and ask them what you need to do. Get the answer in writing if possible, or the person's name for reference.

QLD , Boat needs registration , Trailer needs registration , Operator / driver of boat must have licence if boat has engine 6hp or above , no licence required if boat is a "hire" boat , licence is only issued after an accredited licence course is completed which now costs $150+ , actual licence costs $33 and lasts for life as long as not revoked for car/boat infringements eg. drink driving ect.

In Victoria they recognize interstate license/registration exactly as per “home state” rules for short visit (1 or 3 months – do not remember). Thus TAS, SA and NSW visitors have no problem in Victoria. However if you do not require license in NT then I do not know how they interpret this. Try to call
Water Police 1800 135 729.

In SA a once only fee is applicable for a boat license.
In Victoria once you are on a full adult license ( as opposed to an under 16) it is renewed every 1,3 or 5 years

My hubby had to do a recreational skippers ticket, in WA. But he decided to go the full hog, just encase he had to drive a boat anywhere else. He did a national power boat handling course, which covers every state. It cost about $300 or $400 to do it. Involved going to a boat club for table tops exercises on mapping, nav and boat laws ( bouys and roundabouts, yeap they even have them in the sea), doing a written and practical exam as
well.
He liked the practical, he was allowed to hoon in brand new boat, as the bloke owned the dealership, as
well as being trainer for NPBHC.

Thanks for you replies.
It seems I am fishing from the bank, I can get a permit being a restricted use permit for the boat, but I still need a license to drive it.
Cheers Steve.

In Victoria you need a license for everything. We tax the license holder for having a license.
If you have the audacity to use the license for its intended purpose, you run the risk of a substantial fine.....we fine everyone, regardless of their status!
Welcome to the friendly state.
LOL
