I manage a fleet of 4wd vehicles at work and the clutch on our 2005 3.0L Patrol Wagon has just blown. The vehicle has done just over 40,000kms and has never towed anything. I have read other posts saying Nissan claim that clutch problems over 10-15,000kms are wear and tear and wont fix the problem on warranty. To my knowledge the vehicle has not been bogged and rarely, if ever gets used offroad. The mechanic says that it looks like a once off burning out of the clutch plate and even the fly wheel has been damaged. I can understand how that might happen as the person driving it at the time may have been overcompensating for the clutch slipping making the problem exponentially worse. How does this happen after 40,000kms? Is this something that can be taken up with Nissan, or am I wasting my time?
Cheers

I think you may have answered your own question with this comment.
"I can understand how that might happen as the person driving it at the time may have been overcompensating for the clutch slipping making the problem exponentially worse."
No clutch is bullet proof.

I would approach Nissan and play dummy. If they reject - bad luck. But you always can try another dialer ;-)

Yep. I have done clutches in them from 50 000 km and up. Usually the dual mass flywheel craps itself. Throw it away and put an exedy solid state one in and have no more troubles ever again with the clutch.

Mmmm. yes the dual mass flywheel has crapped itself. I have to change the Nissan over next year, so dont think i will spending extra $$ on an extra solid clutch. Bit nervous that this may be a common problem... Has anyone had any luck with Nissan on this one??

Nissan won't do anything about it. You will find there is not much more expense in fitting the solid flywheel conversion apart from the replacement dual mass flywheel.

nissan will replace the clutch under waranty
providing there is no hot spots on the fly wheel but then they will charge you for the whole job if there is hot spots.
ps we have changed heaps(one today)and they all have had hot spots.
cheers

My brother in law has just sold his 3 1/2 year old Turbo Diesel 3.0L Patrol for $24K. This vehicle with metallic paint looked terrific and tough it had done just over 150k. He could not take the stress of not knowing when the vehicle would breakdown next. His vehicle had never gone off the tar.
Not only has he lost a lot of money on the vehicle since this was to see him thru retirement but he now has lost faith in all 4wd Diesels.

I sold my 2002 3.0tdi 5sp manual patrol for same reason this year. Fantastic car while it's going but...how long is that going to last??? always the question hanging over it.
So I just bought a TD 100 series cruiser auto. I know they have some issues but I'll deal with them straight away. As far as I know, the motors are excellent.

only real issue is the front end. As a touring vehicle they are terrific. What year, post or pre Sept02?

OT I know but what did it set you back out of curiousity (from a dealer I assume?)
Something to watch out for that I found was that one CV collapsed when bogged in the sand and had it replaced, 20000km later I saw oil (or thought it was) leaking from the otherside CV. I removed the boot to find the grease had completely broken down to the consistency of gearbox oil.
Its not on the service requirements but I slid both boots back, cleaned the stuff out (inner and outer were the same) and repacked them. Put new clips on from Coventry (old ones work good still though).
Also watch out that the torsion bars havent been wound up, or you will have CV trouble later.

Give Nissan a go for the warranty - they may meet you 1/2 way. These clutches are not too bad, but the flywheels are prone to issues if not driven properly or if used in particular circumstances.
I went through a clutch in
mine very quickly - was due to the fact i tow a large boat, and had to reverse it up a steep driveway every weekend. this quickly ate into the clutch.
(Was a good excuse to buy a bigger boat that i cant tow so not to sad about the clutch replacement.)
But seriously, when i had my clutch pulled out it had damanged the flywheel.
Am now on my second standard nissan clutch - at 100,000ks + and no issues. I pondered the solid flywheel option mentioned here by some other posters, but these have been known to cause some vibration through the drive train - ive driven one that had changed to a solid flywheel, and at low revs on take off it had a terrible shudder.
good luck....
Cheers,
Jack180
