Jonny,
We've had the book now for several years both in hard and soft copy. Day trips are from all capital cities and there are also trips Australia wide. All are rated but IMHO the ratings err on the cautious side (eg. moderate = easy) so no nasty surprises. As
well, the book includes sections on vehicle preparation, trip planning,
what to take, outback travel tips etc etc. The Oz wide maps included at the back of the book are also quite good, although not at a detailed regional level.

Jonny, its a good, if not brilliant book. You'll get a lot from it trip prep, reading about the ares you intend to travell. You can then take it further and access additional reference material if you wish. The book covers short trips form all capital cities as
well as major
treks in each state. It has information about all the popular major outback/desert
treks.
The information is a few years old now, so for specific up-to-date information, you'll need to look elswhere (like here). The book will be updated in about 24 months, but in the meantime the current edition is a good starting point.
Melissa is right, the trek ratings are on the conservative side. Just bear in mind that some get "moderate" or "hard" ratings based upon the remoteness rather than the actual 4x4 difficulty.
IMHO, its worth a read (and the $$), but remember, when you've decided where your going and have the background info, come back here and ask questions. You'd be unlucky to find somewhere about which someone on this
forum can't provide recent information.
Have fun planning.Life just ain't that serious.
