Hi all.
Just some feedback on my experience with the
snorkel oil foam pre-cleaner insert.
Aside from the fact that it most definitely *doesn't* get sucked into the
snorkel. :-)
I put one in for around town just to see how it would go. This was strictly just around town (city), no dusty roads etc.
Initially, no noticable difference in power or economy but 10 days later without a clean, not huge amounts of driving either, and boy was it choking. Felt like it was towing a trailer, economy 25% worse off, dropped out of overdrive up mild inclines, etc.
Took it out and it had a lot of crap caught in it. I was amazed. I can see the value when out & about in the dust especially, but I'm too lazy to clean it so often just with city use, so out it came.

I get rid of the snake head on
mine (got 2 in the shed now) and put up a donaldson type pre cleaner and spray the inside with the old spray oil and 90% of the dust doesn't make it to the filter but in really hard going areas you might have to clean it every 3 to 5 days. A rinse in soapy
water and its all good. Got one on the cruiser at the moment (4.2 T/D) and dont notice any performance or economy difference although if you dont get the right size you can choke it but a call to donaldson can put you on the right track..

While i can not catagorically say i have had it happen, i know a mechanic asked me straight away if i had one fitted,, and the reasion was i was complaining of low power and had a
snorkel fitted....im suggesting that if you took that filter out in the dust, it would quickly become very blocked and rip appart if not removed in time...the vacuum a diesel makes is powerful enough to rip skin from your hand if you place it over the end of the inlet pipe at idle....to stall the motor for instance.
All that aside, it is great you have gave us this followup info...

lol. Yeah the vacuum can be strong. I checked
mine once by taking the head off and putting my hand over it with a gutsy rev. Near broke the fingers! lol.

On the point of ripping skin from your hand, we had problems with the electrics of a stationary diesel (65hp), that is how we had to stop it, covering the air inlet with a hand, no broken skin. must admit, it was a strong suck.
by the way, how are ya tone?

Hi Tone,
I made up some filter socks about 1 meter long that are held in place with the head of the
snorkel and sewn at the end and sewn part way up (500mm) creating three cylinders to catch the crap and allow the incoming air to exit down the
snorkel. Soaked in Diff oil and used three over 5 weeks across the Simpson, outback SA (8000km) etc mostly following my brother in law. Results were really impressive. the crap that it caught was staggering and finer filter stayed clean. In fact I have just put the Finer filter back in its packet for next time. Not bad compared to my brother in law who stuffed a brand new filter between here and Ayers rock as he didn't have a
snorkel. Anybody going on dirt roads without a
snorkel for an extended period would be stupid IMHO.
We made up some fine material sheets that adhered to the outside of his filter from then on and just changed the filter material sheets. This worked a treat as
well but more work in dissassembling air filter assembly and dust around the intake.

A cyclonic pre-cleaner needs much less frequent cleaning but still separates out the fien dust and bugs so your paper element stays less obstructed.
They are standard on the Pajero DiD and V6.

Shades of the company who must not be named [hi ----e] , think you will find that most vehicles have a fan shaped devise in a preclean box tucked inside the mudguard to catch a lot of the crappola prior to filter,
