Auto transmission behaviour

I have an auto GQ Patrol (and you'd be hard pressed to get me back in a manual these days), and I have recently noticed that when I start the vehicle after it has been sitting for a while, it takes a few seconds to engage the transmission. This happens if I try to engage either drive or reverse. Once it has engaged, the transmission behaves beautifully for the rest of the day.

Has anyone noticed similar behaviour in their vehicle? Is it a sign of problems coming? The truck has done about 170k, and apart from trips to Straddie and Fraser has had a pretty easy life.

Serviced 5 k back. Fluid is still nice and red and clear. Not sure how long before that it had been serviced as I have only had the truck 6 months.

Check fluid, unless bright red change it, get transmission serviced as there is probably a filter in it that requires cleaning or replacing.

Fluid still red, only 5 k old. Pretty sure that no filters were changed at the time of service though.

Mate, I have a GQ Ti Auto Diesel. 205 thou on the clock, many trips towing camper on and off road; outback W.A., central NSW and Cape York to name a few. Keep it serviced and she'll be trouble free. My GQ will last probably longer than me (except for cosmetic scrapes & scars). The only thing about the auto (but I can live with it) is the fluid gets mighty hot in hot conditions towing (Nullabor) and descent control (ten cent/five cent).

I'd check your fluid level/condition.

Mate, a GQ Ti Auto Diesel - that's a rare beast and you have me drooling! Do you have a separate auto transimssion cooler?

Checked the fluid, still looks good, if anything level is overfull.

There should be is return valve somewhere in your transmission pump and it playing funny. If change fluid does not helps, then you have only two choices – live with this and wait until something more serious happens to fix everything at once or fix it now.
Actually it is another and the best option – get manual! :-P

You must be a young fella! I live in central Brisbane where everything is up hill and down dale, and I am too old and lazy to work the clutch. Agree that a manual is best for the rough stuff, but you can't beat an auto on the beach!

I will definitely not be waiting until something more serious happens, that sounds way too expensive.

Oh, I wish my friend, I wish! My older son turns 21 recently :-)
But, having auto and driving lots of rental and company autos I know that I am going to use manual as long as I can lift my left foot.
Do not have much experience with beaches, but during sand driving across Small Desert in North-West of Victoria I failed to see any predicament of using manual.
Cheers
Serg.

PS. Check valve – it can be in filter actually.

KSV you seem to be right.
Took it to the transmission shop who diagnosed I am getting "converter draindown" where all the fluid from the torque converter drains back to the sump over a day or two. Tells me it is OK to drive so long as I let it idle for 10s or so at start up for the pump to refill the converter. At least $800 to get if fixed so I will have to live with it for a while. There goes my OME suspension upgrade!

I had an Isuzu with a similar problem but only in reverse. It was a clogged filter in the gear box.

Well I'll be buggered! I didn't even know there was a filter in there! (Which is pretty stupid of me when I think about it - all oil systems need a filter!) I'll get it checked.

In my experiance with autos , when that starts to happen it could be low on oil or the rubber seals and O,ring in the clutches are getting hard , a sign of old age or to much heat , put an external cooler on it
cheers
