Hi, I recently bought a 1993 jayco campervan. Unfortunately the electrolux 3 way fridge is only partly working. The freezer section is working on gas but the rest of the fridge isn't. Is this a common problem with them? I have just turned it over to 240V and will check it in the morning. I live in
Ballarat. Any suggestions on where I should take it for a service.
Thanks! Andrew

Hi Andrewn,
How long has the fridge been sitting and not going?
Sometimes if these fridges have been sitting for a while without going they take a while to kick in, its to do with the heat exchange system they use.
I have one in my Swan and it did a similar thing, I took it out of the van and drove 300Ks to get it to a repair bloke only for him to tell me to drive back, put it in the van, to it on and it will work.
He was right.
His theory was, the rough ride in (it was in a trailer) helped loosen up the ammonia etc thats in the system and it would then be OK.
Hope this helps.

Unless this is a 2 door fridge I can not see how the fridge works as you suggest. The freezer section is the only thing that is cooled. The rest of the fridge is cooled by air convection - the warmer air in the top of lower section is cooled by the bottom of the freezer and falls to the bottom of the fridge.

No it hapens but I guess the rest ofthe fridge doesnt get cold coz the freezers not working
well enough to get the rest of the fridge cold.
Is the gas bottle full?
Mine would work fine but lose effeciency as the gas got down. It really only worked best when over 1/2 full
Dunno why my limited knowledge of ow it worked never plained this

It may have a blockage in the lines one way to try and fix it is to remove the fridge and turn it up side down for a few hours the replace let it settle and switch it on

Very common problem.
They are a "cool weather only" fridge at the best of times.
When operated, they must be level, and very
well ventilated in the back. (A small computer fan helps to get rid of hot air)- if run off level, the ammonia does not circulate, overheats and causes blockages.
These blockages can sometimes be temporarily fixed by shaking, even turning the fridge upside down- but it basically means your fridge is "on borrowed time" and is NOT repairable without a complete new cooling unit-very expensive!
Cheers

I agree, that these fridges are best suited to moderate climatic conditions. Throw in high humidity and/or very high temps, and you will find yourself with a totally useless bit of equipment.
My camper trailer had one and I got so frustrated with it that I junked it and bought a Engel upright replacement which is effectively the same dimensions.
I fitted a pair of batteries and it runs 24/7 either off the batteries (when we're
camping), or off the 240v when it's in the garage.
Best mod I've ever done to the camper!
