Hi all. I have just purchased a 1998 Traveller 16ft pop top and would like to fit a radio into the van. My big problem is that I am technically useless. Would there be someone out there to step me through how this is done. I would like to run the radio off mains power if possible. Many thanks, George, Melbourne.

Well I was thinking of a car radio to go in the van. And installing it by cutting out the ply and insert, with some form of metal bracket holding/supporting the bulk of the radio which would then of course be out of sight. I think I can do this but it is the wiring, and what I need for the radio to work off mains power that I have no idea about. Many thanks for your interest..

Why do you want to run a car radio (12V) on 240V.

I assume you have a 12V battery in the van, or is this not the case ?

If not the options are

(1) to fit a car battery (wired back to the trailer plug so it recharges while travelling) and then fit the radio as you described and simply run the + (positive) & - (negative) wires back to the battery or

(2) If a battery is already fitted to the van fit the radio as you described and simply run the + (positive) & - (negative) wires back to the battery.

Either of these options will obviously require the installation of speakers and the running of the appropriate wires, or

(3) as stated in another reply, get a 240V powered radio or a battery operated radio

Of course

Cheers,

Cruiser

We've just got a $29.00 mains power/ 3xD size battery am/fm radio. Works beaut. No technical skill required. I've been using it off the same 3 batteries for 2 years now, and they're still going strong. Even when on a powered site. Much easier to move it around the camper, inside and out. Cheers.

If you want to run a normal car radio / CD player from the mains 240v, you would have to do as the above have said, the only other way is to have a 12v power supply that would be plugged into 240v and allow you to use the radio on the 13.8v.

If you have a 12v pump for water you could plug the radio into that supply.

As it sounds like you will only be using the radio in parks with powered sites.
