Thanks everyone who responded with a variety of "fixs" to removing the taste of plastic from the
water tanks.
I tried the idea of the Bicard Soda and found that improved the taste somewhat, however the taste was still there. I then tried that idea a second time and again there was an improvement in the taste, but still a hint of plastic.
I finally purchased a 200g container of
Tank Cleen from the local caravan place and followed their instructions and after doing so, I can happily report that the taste of plastic has GONE.
I finally tracked down what had I concider to be the cause of the problem in the first place. About 5 weeks ago, we had been away and I had 2 x 20 litres of
water in plastic containers (the type you buy at Big W or
camping shops) and I had emptied them into the caravans tanks on the last day before we came home. On return home, I simply refilled my tanks in anticipation of the next trip.
These containers are about 8 years old and had sat in the garage empty for about the last 3 years. On opening them today they have a very strong plastic smell, so my guess is that they have started to break down somehow, probably through lack of use or
water stored in them.
Once again, thanks everyone for the help.
Cheers,
Cruiser

Well Done Cruiser,
Good to hear. Nothing worse than that 'plastic 'taste.
That
Tank Cleen works on the plastic gerry cans as
well.
I used it on
mine after the success with the bigger
tank. I cannot remember how old they were , but they were not
young.
Lastly, that tub of
Tank Cleen I purchased over two years ago is still half full .
Cheers
Richard

My tanks total 180 litres and a 200g container treats by coincidence 180 litres, so its all gone, but for $15 it was
well and truly worth it.

Missed the original post Cruiser, but appreciate this link.
We have a black poly "caravan"
tank, plus 'olive-drab' gerry cans. No taint with either, and they're filled via an OLD garden hose from our polluted rain
water tanks.
Due to my stupidity, we needed to buy a hose in Kununarra, and Man,
Gold turned to Dust: The petrochemicals from that hose would possibly have been enough to fire-up an Isuzu.
So that's my five cents shot: I'm out.
Jeff.
