My speedometer and odometer are not working. What could be wrong and how do I fix it? Is it electrical or mechanical?

Could be broken :-)
Perhaps you'd get some helpful replies if you mentioned what vehicle you have.

If you don't have a workshop manual which would tell you, check the transmission; near where the tailshaft connects, there will be either a mechanical speedo cable or an electric sender coming out the side of the transmission.
If it's a cable, your problem is probaby a snapped inner cable. Replace the inner by extracting the broken bits from each end and slide in a new inner.
If it's an electric sender (more likely on modern vehicles), then the wires may have pulled out. If the wires haven't pulled out, more testing is required, but the results of the testing will depend on the technology; is the sender Hall-effect or electromagnetic. Not enough info to help further.

Just had a call from the auto leky it was the fuse inside as you said looked ok when i pulled it out yesterday but was faulty. I will be putting the test lamp in the car from now on. Thank you all

Turned out to be a fuse inside the vehicle (fuse panel under steering wheel) for the instruments. It looks like it was fuse $24 from the reply he got above.

On inspection they looked OK but when he replaced it all the instruments came back.

Have a close look at them and if in doubt, replace.

Cheers,

Cruiser

hmm when something that gets your attention stops working ......
i remember in the valiant if the clock stopped working it meant your brake light fuse had blown.

speedos not working on work utes was common - it meant you had ripped out the wiring to it - however this didnt affect the tacho

Or had the speedo disconnected for "warranty" reasons.
