We do a caravan trip after Christmas each year. SWMBO wants to go to
Canberra so planning to travel (from
Adelaide) through central Victoria (got rellies at Mt Beauty), then
Canberra. Will have our 6y.o. and 12 y.o. girls with us.
Love to take in a few side trips in
Vic High Country but probably just day trips out of c’van parks as van only good for the black top.
We hate booking c’van parks and after New Years we normally get away with that. Bit concerned parks all a dust bowl with drought.
So Forumites, I'm interested in your thoughts. What’s will it be like through central Vic this January etc? What might enhance our trip and what might bugger it up?
thanks in advance, JD

the flies are ferral this year! I reckon they are as bad as the outback. And did I mention the cicadas? Absolutely ear splitting at the moment. I have never heard them so loud! But don't be put off I'd still go as I like to get away too.

Yep, the cicadas are loud at the moment, while away recently i thought there was a problem with the car while driving along, so i stopped to check out the squealing, it was the cicadas, LOL.

Apparently the Cicadas do a 5 or 7 year cycle. 5 years ago we spent NY out the back of
Licola. They were so loud from dawn to dusk that we were all yelling at each other. The drive home was amazing. Ears were still ringing like we had been in a night club all week. You would be sitting in your chair under the trees that the buggers would be weeing on you. 46 degrees mixed with incessant cicada noise and wee is a lethal cocktail...

You could drive the Eskdale Spur Track from Mt Bueaty to
Tallangatta. It will be a full day drive but challenging in spots. There is an old plane wreck in the hills there that might be worth a visit. It is difficult to locate without a gps though but ask some locals and you find some more info. Our 4wd club along with Towong shire put together a 4wd touring map with some trip notes. Give the shire a call and they may send you one to check out before you arrive.
Another good drive is to Mitta from Mt Bueaty and come back across the range from Eskdale.

Also a day trip to include Dartmouth is possible from Mt Beauty.
Go and do the Hedge Maze in
Bright, that will entertain the kids for a while. just don't take a pram through as it is a bit tight ;))
