New user to this site. Info for others that will save you money as it did me. Had major dramas getting spare key for my 2000 Prado. After a lot of leg work and phone calls discovered that I could get a key cloned from my single key that I received when i purchased the vehicle two weeks ago.The key I had was a spare and not one of the masters that was needed to code another key from. Found a way of getting this key cloned and not copied to alleviate problem. Now have spare key at a cost of $140 instead of $800 - $1500 as quoted by Toyota. If anybody needs info contact me by email. James.

Aparently this is going on with some brand name dealerships where second hand cars are being on sold with only one key "because that's all it was traded in with" to generate business for their spare parts division in selling the unwitting buyer a new spare key.
It happened to a mate and my mother, who went to the extent of contacting the previous owner, who advised that a full set of two remotes and a service key were handed in with the trade in vehicle. Only one remote key could be found when the car was re-sold.
Mister minit does non remote control clones of keys that will unlock and start Toyotas. (around $150 I think)

This does seem a truly excessive cost. We have had to purchase replacement keys for our 2002 Mitsubishi Magna. 1 set got lost and another set was stolen. $68 for a coded programmed key and $64 for a key fob from Mitsubishi. I would expect them to be of similar technology and operation.

Craig,
The big cost with Toyota is to replace the ECU if you don't have a black master key. Its ridiculous. Glad the HDJ79 don't have transponder keys.
