Further to my post a few days ago (and thanks to all for their feedback), I read with interest the latest Drive Car of the Year results. Best 4WD under $40,000 is the x-trail followed by the CRV & RAV. The CRV & Xtrail were close but from what I can gather, the CRV scored points for a very nice interior while the xtrail scored far better for performance and standard curtain airbags.
Thanks again for the advice posted earlier.
Extra note - the new landcruiser won the next category up - although it was only tested against the Audi, RR Freelander and the Kluger - hardly competition in the actual off-road stakes...

We went over to Straddie last Dec and a mate of
mine took his new x-trail over there and I was really surprised that it went everywhere the patrol went. I had to use low range a couple of times to get up over the dunes in some really soft sand and the x-trail made it look like it was nothing. The one and only thing my mate said was that it didn't have enough clearance on some parts but for what they us it for it's perfect

Sounds like what I am after. partner now has work vehicle which i cannot drive, so we are looking for a small 4WD for me to use while he is away. I do none of the heavier stuff we normally do together, just a lot of gravel and soft stuff.

Howdy,
Just read the Drive write-up. Pretty similar to my thoughts when we were looking at new Xtrails last month. What model are you thinking of getting?
As I said before, we tossed up and ended up buying the previous series, but cost was a big factor. Paid $30,400 on the road for a 2007 auto ST-S T30 demo with 6,000k and it had towbar, tint and mats. It was also white, which was our preferred colour. Current ST auto is $33,990 plus costs less whatever discount you talk them down on.
Enjoy your shopping :-))

What about the Toyota Kluger ?? We had one come up to
Stockton Beach with us a few months ago, went every where with ease and plenty of power on tap for climbing the
sand dunes.Ground clearance would probably be similiar to the Xtrail I would say. V6 and good on the fuel as
well. Can get the cv for under 40k in auto, climate air, 7 seater and rear dickie seats fold flat into rear cargo area. Just a thought ?? Regards Steve M

My Wife has a X trail as the second car we use to have a turbo Subaru, I never use to drive it as it was too small for my frame but the x trail is great & as it has a legal 2 ton tow rating she now tows the horse float with it & it shocks me how
well it tows
regards Vince
