Opinions on winch rope versus cable , good / bad or indifferent state of the Aus $ means buying from the USA direct is not too expensive but is the Amsteel blue all its made out to be ??

The only downside to plasma rope is the price and it's lack of resistence to "nasty" situations (ie: being dragged over rocky surfaces).
If you can afford plasma, go for it.....but take appropriate precautions on rocky ground.

Axel,
I totally agree with Roachie regarding damage over rocks etc, benifits are even SWMBO can handle the weight of the rope.
One thing to have a think about, I got my rope from the USA for $240 including freight. If you need a contact mate msg me.

Winch rope doesn't cope
well with heat, such as from the brake on the winch. In most
winches, the brake is insidse the winch drum, so it heats the drum - not an issue with steel cable. I don't know how much of a problem it is for occasional short uses, maybe only an issue when doing a lot of winching in a short time.
Cheers

Most low mount
winches have the brake in the drum. The brake is meant to hold the winch. It only heats up if you spool out under power. It can then cause an issue with some ropes. Most winch manuals will state not to power out for long periods as it will wear the brake out. Winching in does not heat the drum so there is no issue for the rope. I reckon it is a good practice to power out just enough to release the hook and then out however much line you need.
BTW, I bought my Amsteel Blue and Aluminium hawse from okoffroad in the US. Good service, great price - in fact, I ended up selling my steel cable for about the same price as the rope.
Just on the hawse - check whether it has offset holes for mounting if you have an ARB bar - prevents the rope rubbing in the edge of the cradle when the drum is full of rope. Just mention it to them and they will explain the ins and outs.
