So some new Landcruisers come fittewd with Twin Turbo's.

So how does this work?

Having read about all the minor troubles people have with Turbo's here on the forum I wonder how a Twin Turbo will go. One Turbo gets out of sync...then what?

A Looooong time ago afore I knew a little about cars I acquired a Triple Carb Vauxhall VX 490. Geez, when it was tuned right it went like a shower of the proverbial. But when one carby dropped out one had Mega Frustration and aggro.....lol

Cheers

Hey Willem, me thinks multiples of anything cause to many problems, look what multiples of the opposite sex causes. LOL

Good point Willem

I understand that there is a turbo for each bank of the V8. If one bank was not functioning correctly I can't imagine it doing a lot of good for the engine as a whole.

It is one thing to have one cylinder not quite right but to have a whole bank operating less than the other bank could be interesting.

One possibility (the twin turbo rice burners have this configuration, but the rev heads replace the twin turbos with one massive one) is to have a smaller turbo for low boost at off idle revs, with the second turbo cutting in at higher revs. Its supposed to compensate for the turbo lag. I dont know if this is what the cruiser has though.

Willie Not sure what vehicle it is (poss a Peugeot) I read about a few months back, it had a 1.3ltr donk with a blower for low down power and then shut the blower down at around 2,000rpm allowing the turbo to take over..... Along your thoughts it sounds great if its all running fully tuned, beg head ache if not..

More than one Turbo on a diesal is common
the 793 dumpys at work had 2 and the same engines in the shovels i think had 4
from memory one turbo just feeds fewr air inlets

The big and small turbo for the ricers ive heard of before would hacve good applications for slow offroad work and then highway cruising surely.
As for problems well normally maybe but it is a cruiser so i wouldnt worry too much

- thinking of trading up?. I would think by the time youd geared it up you should get a bit of change from 80k

It's pretty simple Willem. 2 turbo's one for each bank and both turbo's are identical. They both boost into a common inlet manifold or more likely the intercooler is common to both turbo's and then into the intake manifold. so any variation of boost pressure of either turbo is equalised so all inlet ports see the same boost pressure.
Regards Andrew.

Actually I recall reading somewhere that they are two different sized turbos - essentially a primary and secondary that feed into both banks.

I seem to recall that this car had triple carbs. 'Twas second hand when I bought it. It was a long time ago so memory could have been corrupted in the mean time...lol

There you go. I am enlightened. I seem to stand corrected on the triple carby bit but somewhere in my past I had a car with triple carbs. Will have to go through my list of 104 vehicles to date to see if I can figure out which one it might have been. Can discount 23 straight away as they were all 4x4's.

You didn't have a jag die you? They had 3, but in reality only ran on 2 - the middle one was operated by the choke control and was only there to provide a rich mixture when cold starting.

hahahahaha......Willie has yet to graduate to ONE turbo (just like me and my Chev). Naturally aspirated, old-fashioned technology donks are the best way to go in the neva-neva!!!!
