Turbo Whistle on 100Series TD auto

Gotta agree with Hughesy there.
Nothing better than the sweet sound of a turbo doing its thing, except if you are in an old Acco Tipper.

Where and when did you hear that Mirlees engine under load?

In the 50's I worked in the sawmill at Licola (Vic.) which was powered by a staight 8 Blackstone/Mirlees 450kva set.
One of my jobs (mill maint.) was looking after that old girl, what a beautiful engine.
And the sound from the turbo as the load came on was quite something.

Also worked on a 5 cyl. Ruston, just a continual "clackety clack"

I worked on Mirrlees KV16 majors at Kambalda in the early 60s and also Blackstones in Kalgoorlie and Norseman. Also a number of Rustons (G.E.C., English Electric) and of cause the old Bellis and Morcolms. We did find, although I did not work on them as they were redundant some old Thornicroft Vis-Vis engines. My worst experience with engines was a twin bank Blackstone in Kalgoorlie which threw its governor and took off. It later died of silicosis

Bellis & Morcolm. Another memory for me. Some of the bush mills in E. Gippsland were steam operated and the B&M fully enclosed high speed double or triple exp. would have been the Rolls Royce of steam power. Whisper quiet too.
They would last forever, but boiler maintenance/water treatment was another matter!

Yep I agree, I have a straight through exhaust on the patrol, Windows down, Cap on backwards, arm out the window. Turbo whistle heven!!!!! LOL

That 3'' exhaust you've got...did you do any other mods or just whack on the exhaust and go, apart from the Dtronic I mean.

And what diffences did the larger exhaust make?

Initially i fitted the exhaust and found it spooled up quicker and had a noticable difference,then fitted the D-tronic,again another noticable difference better idle,less smoke,sharper throttle response.up the boost to 15 psi just rounded the package off nicely,chalk and cheese from std to modified.round town fuel economy remains same but far improved performance and also towing ease.can take off from lights on slight uphill or corner and spin front wheel(285/75/16 ATs)once boost kicks in(1500-1700 rpm)stoked with its performance now,drives heaps better.cheers Paul ps must watch that front diff now LOL

How do you up the boost to 15 PSi as you mentioned, and what is it usually?

Fitted a variable boost controller(manual one)under dash.was 12.5 PSI before.apparently they have 16PSI cut outs fitted so i kept it under that.Paul

My turbo also whistled noticeably before I added a 3" mandrel bent exhaust and D'tronic.
Does anyone with this configuration have the engine warning light go on momentarily when putting the boot in? The mechanic thought it might be over boosting and I've been thinking about a turbo boost and EGT gauge.

when i poke mine in the guts flat foot it has a momentory dead spot then off she goes!doesnt matter if your cruisin or from standing start it does it.have never seen any lights come on.it is possible that it is over boosting and the cut out mom kicks in,brings light on then boost settles and it goes off.i have a boost gauge on mine and going to put an EGT on it too.but if it is only std i dont see it being that as stock boost is way below the cut off of 16 PSI.cheers Paul
