hi everyone,

i have a 12HT which has done about 350K km and have just descovered that the head gasket has blown (and has been so for a long time) and the 3rd cyl bore is corroded. I have not seen it yet but it doesn't sound good. What i need to know is:

Do these engines have liners?

Do toyota offer oversize pistons?

Is aftermarket gear any good for this stuff??

would i get away with 3rd cyl repair without doing overhaul to keep costs down?

any thoughts would be appreciated..

thanks

I quick look in the my old man's Gregory's manual and looks like you may in luck. It does look like the 12HT may have had replaceable cylinder liners. If not, may be able to over-bore and sleeve it back to size (I know of being done to various engines).

Note:
Early 2H (1981) had replaceable cylinder liners while later 2H (1982-89) did not have replaceable cylinder liners. I do not know about the 12HT...

hi Sweeney,

thanks so much for the help but alas i have just found a website with genuine toyota manuals (in pdf) and a look through that shows that they do not have cyl liners... what a bummer. Oversize pistons are available however so perhaps i will go with the bore and oversize option.

i would like to hear from anyone that has used aftermarket repair kits to see what they think of the quality. there is one on ebay for a bit over $1K which may be an option.

for anyone interested the site is:
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/adherence.4x4/liens_techniques.htm

the page is in french but the manuals are in english...

Any reliable engine overhaul shop should be able to bore and sleeve 1 cylinder back to standard but may not be too keen on any warranty.

Given the relatively hi K's it may be worth doing a full re-bore and new pistons, maybe worth a full engine rebuild if the body etc is OK.

Just my thoughts FWIW.

Disco.
