Tony
The Plenty Hwy unless it's wet is suitable for 2wd cars with the usual caution.
Not sure if you made a type error but the name is Coober Pedy , not cobberpedy

G'day anthony,
A few years ago my wife and I head back across the Plenty H'wy,from west to east. There had been rain in the previous week so the flowers and bindis were out in force. From the west it's a pretty easy trip for the first hundred kms or so?, travelling further east you hit the dirt/sand. Here it can be a bit tricky, we came upon two European couples bogged to the axles in the sand( both these couples were assured, where they bought their cars that'd there be no problem getting across the Plenty)
So just be aware that, yes! mostly in the dry it's ok but if you are towing a van, it may 'track' on you. When you are in the wheel ruts and they can be deep the vans axle(s) may be dragging the centre ridge. When we went across the sand was about 45cm deep and very, very hot!!!. Just remember fuel and water
There are some great spots to camp along the way.
Have a great time

andy

Don't remember any sand when I went across, just lots of gravel and corrugations. Sure you're not thinking of the Sandover?

I don't use caravan - so comments are about normal 4 WD.

I travelled it early this year. Officially it was closed after rain but got permission to try it. After rain it becomes very boggy in a few sections. The road dries out quite quickly. I can't remember the sand - could have been there but not memorable to me.

Try overnight camp on river crossing just west of Boulia - suitable for vans. A couple of river crossings may be attractive for camps.

Tobermory camp ground on NT border is now closed to tourists (I understand).

Cheers
Chris

G'day Tony & Bev
As others have said the Plenty is usually an easy run.
Have a look around this site - there's heaps of info on travelling with kids and track conditions (on the left under "Search by Topic", above under "Treks" etc.)
Do heaps of research - you don't want to miss something good!
Cheers from the Moose

Tony,

Yes its an easy run. A few corrugations and some dust. I towed my Trakmaster van across from Alice to Bouila in June this year. My brother-in-law also towed his Bushtracker. Spent the first night in a gravel scrape and the second night camped at the Georgina River towards the Bouila end.
