hi doug and dusty,
do you know how these compare with the topo maps you use with ozi-explorer. i paid $260 for all the topo's for nsw.
i plan my trips with ozi and load info into my garmin 72 and sometimes use it with laptop as a moving map.

regards peter

When the new software comes available very soon it will be like moving from pre CDMA phones to Next G , The difference from OziExplorer to OZtopo V2 will like Pre-School to Uni.
Making Waypoints and loading them into the GPS will be just as easy as what you do now , maybe even easier,

OZtopo V2 Website

OZtopo V2 can be used on any Garmin Mapping GPS unit. Although performance, eg drawing time, may vary from model to model, all map features will be displayed. Ideal units for bushwalking and outdoor activities would be the 60Cx range while for Street Navigation units from the Nuvi range would make ideal multipurpose units.

Units will need an SD card, recommend 2GB, for OZtopo V2 to be loaded. If you wish to view OZtopo V2 on a PC then the purchase of a MapSource Program is required. MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager is the lowest priced MapSource program available.

Hello Doug, keep in mind that OztopoV2 is a map data set for use with Garmin GPS units. OziExplorer is a GPS mapping program...so they can not be directly compared as they are two completely different things.

If you were to compare it would be between say Mapsource, Mapsend Lite and OziExplorer. OzTopoV2 could be compared (as you have done) with DAST Topo or the wide range of maps that can be used in OziExplorer (there a many so generalised statements on "best maps" are difficult to make).

Trick is to get the mapping program, maps and GPS that suit you needs, so there are many things to consider, there is no right answer to suit everyone.

Cheers
Greg

I compared the map softwares because everyone uses Ozi and seems to be stuck in a time zone, DAST Topo was not even mentioned , My post dealt with OZtopo V2 and Discover Aus Topo , I guess I was wrong to mention Ozi, it's not even in the same class , it can't be added to a GPS , and if it is added to a PDA it still won't zoom in or out and if a software won't do that then it's not worth it, The 2 softwares mentioned are far superior and if you want me to grade them adding Ozi then I would put Ozi on the scale of 3 , Discover Aus Topo at 5 and OZtopo V2 at 9. ....something at 10 hasn't been invented yet.

Sorry Doug, DAST is short for DiscoverAus Street & Tracks so thats what I meant.. Discover Aus Topo, if you look at the website it is actually referred to as DiscoverAus Street & Tracks Topo

DiscoverAus Streets & Tracks Topo

I am not sure what you mean by "if it is added to a PDA it still won't zoom in or out" as it is possible to zoom in and out on a displayed map in OziExplorer.

All the software/maps you mentioned (and a host of other software/map products) have their good points and bad points - as I said - trick is to get one that suits you needs. You have obviously found the one that suits your requirements, good stuff. Currently OziExplorer suits my needs (though I sometimes use Mapsend Lite and Mapsource depending on what I need to do and the format of the data I have to play with) - they all serve their purpose, but as mentioned no single one is the best for all people.

Rating the various products is good but it would be more helpful if those passing judgment also stated what they were using the product for in good detail. This is vital so potential users can get an idea if the comments relate to them or they should look elsewhere for advice. Just saying product X is cr*p and product Y is the best thing since sliced bread is not very helpful.

Cheers
Greg

Too late Doug, purchased some glasses the other day.

Sorry, just trying to be helpful. Logical discussions are however very difficult on some forums, eXploroz being no exception.

Your a man with exceptional foresight, You'll love the Nuvi , I'm toying with the idea of selling my 660 and getting one too, or maybe just get it and be done with and sell the 660 later .

Boc,

If they're the ones from gpsaustralia you should announce the conditions for their use.
