I am thinking of taking the van down the south coast of NSW in Feb/Mar and whilst I will stay in some van parks, I am looking for free camps that I can get my caravan into.

I haven't been down the south coast for about 30 years, so do any EO members who live there or visit that area regularly have any suggestions.

Cheers,

Cruiser

Geez- don't think you'll find any freebies down the coast these days..
How far 'down the coast' were you thinking of heading??

Heading to a mates property at Pambula for a 7 or 10 days and need somewhere to fill in the time on the way down, then heading over to Canberra and home.

Can't think of any free one but you might like to try Shallow Crossing, 2 adults and 3 kids 4 days, $60 dollars from memory. Lovely place. Call Jim to book and for advice re the van. We had no problems with a trailer.
Have fun!

We camped for a night with Peter McG', just south of Narooma (Potato Point from memory). It was actually a National Park I think, but we got in late in the arvo and left early next morning, so didn't actually "get around" to paying anything......

That was a couple of years ago.

When you are asking for free camps, are you asking only for those in addition to the ones in Camps Australia Wide? Or is it a case of you don't have a copy at all? If not suggest you have a look at it in a bookshop Newsagent or camping shop. This way you can do your research whilst you are deciding whether you are going to purchase it ot not! ! ! !

Thanks for the replies, have contacted Jim at Shallow Crossing and will probably look at somewhere around Jervis Bay as well.

Hi Cruiser

There's not much that's truly free on Jervis Bay.

Try about $60 for the first night at national Parks in the high season - and book early.

An alternative is to go inland into the hills south and west of Nowra where a an offroad type caravan should be OK.

Others with greater knowledge of vanning may help with these spots too.

Try
1. Yalwal and local area approx 25Km south west of Nowra. This area offers many overnight choices and Yalwal itself is recognised free camp
Various overnight spots (not official) along the Braidwood Road MR92 towards Nerriga. There are several good condition tracks about 25-35 Km out of Nowra.
2. The Wandean Road (marked track) is a left turn off MR92 maybe 5km before the Tianjara Falls (see Places). This track offers several opps but becomes high clearance 4WD after 2 km.
3. Tianjara Falls has large parking area and might be good for quick overnight or longer stay (ie visited by several vehicles per day on weekends)
4. There are more tracks into scrub beyond Tianjara Falls which are suitable for overnight stops
5. The choice camping spot on this end of MR92 is definitely the Endrick River - about 5km before Nerriga. The MR92 however is gravel at this point and has a steep narrow winding section just prior to the Endrick.
6. You can also drive further south from Nowra along the Princes Hwy to Wandandian. Here a right turn onto the other end of the well marked Wandean Road wiill take you about 15km to left turn onto Hawthorn track. About 5km along this road to deep water crossing. Your long term free camp spot is before the crossing.
Do not attempt the Wandean Road after significant rain - due to slippery road. You must backtrack from this campsite - across the river is definitely 4WD only.
7. Turn west at just south of Milton for Pigeon House Mountain. Beyond Pigeon House is Yadbora on the wide, shallow, and beautiful Clyde River. Free gamp both sides of the track. Pit toilet.
8. 7 Km further along this road is Long Gully Camp in Morton NP. This is offically overnight only - but I have stayed there a week.
Very few spots for vans beyond here - but you can continue on following the Western Distributor through to the Batemans Bay to Braidwood Road.
Much of the road to Pigeopn House is gravel. Beyond is all gravel. All streams are bridged.
There is another pay camp ground at Nelligen where the BB-Braidwood Road crosses the Clyde River.
9. Another alternative is to check out Pebbly Beach - another pay camp ground - but beautiful.

Cheers
Chris
