I have a Land Rover Discovery 2004 auto diesel and am having the fifth alternator fitted this week due to burning out regulators. The only extra load is the caravan fridge and a Waco in the car.The car has only done 48000 Km.Is anyone else having similar problems with their Land Rovers and any suggestions on fixing the problem?

With fifth alternator I would definitely install good reliable ammeter in car to monitor what is cooking.

If it's a Lucas alternator change to a Bosch .

When I was racing I had a few Lucas change over unit's expire and stuff up my day / night.

I changed my Auto Elect and he fitted a Bosch unit and I never ever had another problem.

I only hope it's that easy for you.

Cheers Scoof.. :-)

I would hope, at this stage, the pommie vehicle manufacturers would have 'seen the light' and dumped fitting Lucas (Prince of Darkness) !!
The first thing we'd do- when preparing rally cars, if they had Lucas components- ditch 'em and replace with Bosch...

The reason that Poms drink warm beer ....................

They have refrigerators built by Lucas.

Remember "Lucas, Prince of Darkness"

Seriously though if the al;ternator is running at or near full capacity they will wear out sooner.
As has been suggested there may also be aproblem with the wiring or accessories themselves.

Yeah, I remember Lucas "Prince of Darkness".

They disappeared from Landrover at the end of the Series 3's (1985) All Rangerover and subsequent landrover models had foreign alternators (ie Marinelli or Bosch) as standard.

Alternators generally are pretty reliable, I'd be looking for intermittent shorts elsewhere in the system.

Fifth alternator in 48,000km - clearly not an issue with the alternator - something is making them fail - find that problem and the problem will be fixed - Landrover alternators are generally pretty reliable

As the Disco 3 came out in 2004, it would be helpful if you stated whether you had a Disco 2 or Disco 3. They have different electrics, therefore different answers to your question.

I would suggest that you look at the Australian Land Rover Owners web site www.aulro.com or if you have a Disco 3, look at www.disco3.co.uk

Each of these forum has a technical advice section that may be of help to you.

Cheers,

Russ

If your actually paying for these replacements , then i would suggest you see a new Auto electrician. There is a difference between electricians you know --- some are New parts fitters - others are fault finders and rectifiers. And after 5 change overs i would suggest you have a new parts fitter.

Are you doing deep water x-ings ? or driving through very dirty muddy water that floods your alternator ?

Has the electrician done a load test on your system ? load test when the electrical s are all off ? to make sure there isnt a "leak" in the system ? If the car is not started for a few days does the battery seam a little weak on engine cranking ?

Any blown fuses that you have had to change? 9 suggesting a dead short or exposed wires that may be earthing out)

what is your amperage draw when the car is running ? what is it when the fridges and caravan is on. does it increase when the trailer plug is hooked on?

does it mainly happen after a weekend away ? ie when you have the caravan hooked up ?? ( possible short in the van >? ) does the van have a battery system with a deep cycle battery that has been totally drained and therefore adding a huge amperage load to the system ?( you can feel this when you drive as it feels like the aircon is on - ie a % of power loss)

LOTS of possible factors that you may have to try to isolate yourself unless you want to spend large $$ at the auto electrician.

Thanks for your comments.Further tests indicate the aux. battery at 55 amp hr is too small and the alternator is flogging itself to death charging a discharged battery each morning.Looks like a solar panel or a larger battery is needed

I do not think you right. If you put bigger battery than AH discharged overnight will not became smaller, quite on the contrary – it can be even more for alternator to do in the morning.
Secondly (and most important) if you alternator flogging itself to death just trying to charge 55AH battery, then it is definitely something wrong with alternator! And this is not the case because you changed 5 of them! I would suggest dig dipper – it is sounds ridiculous to me that even empty 55AH battery can kill alternator. What would then do those people who have 2 (or even 3!) big batteries and winching for half a day?!?

Cheers
