If anyone is interested, Gray's Online Auctions has some solar panels and 4 stroke gennies on tomorrows auction 7th Dec.(www.graysonline.com.au)
Obviously buying new from ExplorOz advertisers and sponsors is a far better and safer method of purchasing, but sometimes we just can't afford the normal retail or discounted retail prices.
Cheers

Hey Kev
That link works great but it only goes to the solar panels.
It may be worthwile for others to link into the generators also? I would do it but absolutely no idea how.
Cheers

Have bought off Grays Auctions before but am very hesitant to do so again.
Their freight charges are exorbitant and they also charge you 12.5% on top of the winning auction price.

I bought a compact flash card for my camera and they sent it in a box big enough to put the camera and my lenses and my video camera in and still have room for the card.
Box was about 15 ins long 10ins wide and 6 ins deep. Card is 2in x 2in x 3/8in
Totally ridiculous.

Is cheaper to look around and even Ebay is cheaper.
Freight on one of those generators to Brisbane is $41 plus 12.5% of whatever u win it for.

I suppose it depends on the price when the hammer comes down - but these are pretty low-powered panels and you'd need a few of em so you'd have to be successful with every bid, more or less.

Interesting link and appreciate the notification but you'd have to be pretty sharp to win several lots and win a few bids. Personally, I could pick the things up and chuck em in the back of the Defender (ute) so freight isn't a problem but you do have the commission to pay as well.

I have exactly the same panel. Bought at Jaycar for $99 on clearance a few years ago. Our only draw is from a couple of fluoros so it keeps up with this on sunny days but would be useless for anything else. It's not waterproof so can't be left set up. The cells are amorphous so shade tolerant but will degrade over time.

Adrian,

Amorphous panels do not actually degrade. What they do do, is produce about 15% over their rated capacity for about the first 100 hours of use. They then settle and produce their rated output for 20 years.

Regards,

Jim.

You're of course quite right Jim - I was slack with the wording. Depending on the brand and construction details it could be a reduction of up to 25% over a couple of months after first exposure. The Unisolar panels that I recall you have are amongst the best and the most important thing is that their rating is probably stated as the "degraded" power. No idea whether the "13W" stated for the ones for auction is the before or after figure. Allow an inefficiency/actual sunlight factor of say another 20% and the 13W becomes say 13 x .8 x .8 = 8.3 For southern States this is probably still an overestimate. Into a partially discharged battery I've never measured more than 350mA from ours. As long as people realise these limitations then all is well. If not then lots of bagging of solar panels results when they don't perform according to the blurb on the brochure.
