Plenty and Donohu Highways are impassable in wet weather. At
Easter 2007 we couldn't get through because of the rain, even the road grader was bogged for some days when the road was going to be opened. Because of the road closure it means a 1500km detour via Mt Isa and
Tennant creek to get to
Alice Springs or
Boulia. Check road conditions at local Police or Information centres if in doubt. Also check your maps and GPS Maps carefully because the Donohu is not clearly shown on a lot of these maps. Because we couldn't travel I don't know what the
sign posting etc.. is like from
Boulia to Alice.

I travelled the Donohue in August this year. There has been a lot of roadworks done near the NT Border. The rest of the road was being upgraded in
places and in good condition and
well marked and it was a smooth run into
Boulia.
It does not rain that often in Central Australia and you have to be unlucky striking a rainy period. I did drive the Plenty once in the rain and it was a tad slippery then but we got through OK. In 2005 all the roads to the east were closed from
Alice Springs and we made our destination in
Birdsville via a Simpson Crossing.

Shh ! Not so loud. People will tell you that the Plenty is a 2wd track. Which it may
well be in the dry with the wind behind you and a road crew in front of you.
Personally I've always found the Plenty to be a bit sus in
places. I rekkon it's plenty long enough :))
