I was chewing the fat with a bloke at the Bendigo show who told me that QLD Govt is apparently introducing laws relating to the fitment and efficiency of Van Fridges.

Apparently has to do with the number of people who have suffered food poisoning due to food being stored in fridges that do not keep stuff cold enough.

I have always kept a thermometer in our Van Fridges and know well that they have gone up to 10 degrees in very hot weather.

The other issue issue that needs to be addressed is the fitting of "ST" climate class fridges. They simply are not up to Australian conditions as they are only rated to operate to 35 degrees (and I reckon that's an overestimate). The most commonly fitted fridge is the Dometic 90L RM 2350, to all makes and types of vans and is rated "ST".

The sooner this is addressed, the better

That's just another reason why I turfed the 3 way fridge in my camper trailer in favour of an upright Engel 2 way fridge.....good as gold!!!

G'day Mick,

The one I bought is the same physical size as the Dometic (note: no "S"), but the door does protrude about 10mm further out. It is an 80 litre fridge and works the same as the Engel chest fridges: IE: 240 volt or 12 volt.....and as soon as you plug the 240 volt cord in, it automatically senses the mains voltage and switches over.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

G'Day Mick and Roachie,

Weaco, Engel and several others make fridges the same size as Dometic 3-way fridges.

Just doing the same as Roachie and tossing the gas fridge out.

Warm scotch on hot days = no camping fun!

Likewise Roachie

When we purchased the previous caravan, we threw out the old 3-way and purchased and Engel upright (around 130 litres) 12/240 volts. An excellent fridge. Not as quiet as the Vtirifrigo we have in the Bushtracker, but acceptable. If it was cool at night, as it often is inland, we'd turn if off at bed time and it held the temperature well.

all fridges are rated at a standard ambient of 35c

what must be considered if the fridge can operate effectively in ambients of temps higher than 35....now in adelaide we rarely experience temps inside the house of higher than 35, so its generally not a problem

if a fridge must work in higher ambients it must have adequate condensing capacity in addition to increased compressor capacity to cope...its some what of a trade off...I am Talking compressor fridges here and not absorption.

the reason they use 35 is so that one can compare electricity consumed to work out the efficiency of a fridge...hence the star rating.......if one (all Manufacturers) were to use a higher ambient say 45c the star ratings would reduce almost proportionally...

forgot to say
absorption type fridges are not as effective as compressor type when ambients are high......

I actually use 2 fridges - the 3 way fridge in the Jayco - and the Wacco CF80 as storage of food such as meat- with this combination i have no probs staying away for days at a time with 4 kids :)
