i face a problem which is i am in need of replacing my Goodrich AT tyres for my landcruiser .I am in perth and i am having a problem sourcing a set as these days most are going to asia and after speaking to Bob Jane today they can source only 5 tyres of my size in the state and they are in karratha of which they said may well have gone already .
What i am looking for is a decent alternative to goodrich and the only ones i wont consider are coopers .Thanks for you advice .pete

I would get five differant ones......say a Cooper, a BFG, a Bridgestone, a Micky Thomas and maybe a Maxxis.

With these five tyres you are sure to keep every one on this forum happy and have at least one tyre that will be good at something.

All tyres are good if you use them right and respect them, I would go with your gut feeling and use a tyre YOU are happy with.

We have Coopers and have not had a proble, much like the people who we know with other brands.

Now did I hear something about someone wanting to buy either a Weaco or Engle....or was it Hella and Lightforce....thats right a 100 series or a Patrol.

Regards Richard

I also have Goodyear Silent Armour 265/75r16. Quiet, Don't chip, and have done 35,000k of mostly rough desert country without problems. 8-9mm tread left.

I was going to go Bridgestone but when I went to a dealer in Ayr I seen these Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S and the price was good at $245 each so on they went, They have a good deep tread, not aggressive or noisy at all ,

Yokohama Geolandar

Doug how long have you had them on? I am tossing up between BFGs Kumhos and the yokies. I watched the video and was impressed. I know bfgs are the ants pants but are a bit more aggressive than I need.
Cheers Pete

Kumho has been one of the worst money wasters I bought,
Had the Yokohama's for 1 month only , but happy with the way they feel as I was with BFGs,

hmmmm...............so which tyre on that test had the most puncture resistant tread,
puncture resistant sidewall,
chipped the least on desert gravel roads
gave the greatest mileage
had the most repeat customers????

What?? Didn't they test that stuff?

Instead the winner of this SUBJECTIVE test on an unladen Hilux was the tyre that spent the most on advertising; was donated for vehicle tests and who appears to be good mates with the people from the mag.

4wd Magazine tyre tests are best used for starting a campfire.

What i find interesting in the test is that if you want a more off road bias tyre, go BFG or Coopers.
If more on road, go pirelli.
If sand, go kumho, or even bridgestone.
At least it breaks it up into a range of tyres for different applications.

Neither coopers of BFG are the best in every category.

Now ring around and get prices and see which then suits you for which purpose.

But then these were ATs tested, if you are after a serious offroad tyre and no compromise, then don't use ATs.

Going by that test youd have to have your head read not to choose the pirelli .
Interesting test though but i would certainly like to find out more about the longevity of the pirellis ,i know i have been more than happy with my Goodriches .

I had a set of Kumho's and had a terrible run from them, 35000km and they were 80% gone. Replaced with Goodyears and got 50000km out of them before I sold the car, took them off and sold them for $100 each with 50% tread left, my mates got them on his trailer now, 6 years on theyre still going.

trying Cooper STT's at the moment will see how they go.

Have 4 x kumho KL78s (newer version of the KL41s, same tread pattern) and done 20,000k. Half worn, but then I find that most tyres for me start wearing better in the 2nd half once the blocks start getting down, so expecting about the usual 60,000k I get out of most tyres. Only got 45 to 50,000k out of the cooper ATs, and they chipped up easily on the development roads, and wore quickly on bitumen at 110k with a full load.
The simex roadtrekkers gave the best wear, 70,000k, but not as good grip on the bitumen. No good for dirt except for good dry tracks. Can't get the AT pattern in my size. Best milage for the dollars. BFGs at twice the price would need to do 150,000k.
The Maxxis 751s on the front seem to be wearing well, but get a resonance now and then at 100k. Not as much grip in the dirt as the kumhos, or as much grip on bitumen.
I was impressed by the toyo opats, good on bitumen, but they are a mild AT pattern, and do clog up quickly in mud. Reasonable milage.
I do tend to push through corners sometimes, when by myself. You know the limit is near when the tyres stop squealing due to the outer edge tucking under. So I am not easy on tyres.

All are 235/85/16 10 plies on the same vehicle.
I have 10 rims between 6 axles including CT, so put the best tyres on for a trip and wear the rest out between trips.
