Still in the market for a HF Radio and am leaning towards a Codan however checked Ebay and noticed ICOM and Kenwood as well.

Now I know nothing about HF really and Icom seem to make a very good uhf radio, how does there HF stack up with Barratt and Codan. As for Kenwood I thought they made cake mixers probably a good radio I would no know.

The other thing is if you are out in the back blocks Codan and Barrett parts maybe able to get a bit easier than other brands.

Anyone shed light on the other brands? or does anyone have them.

For mine, there is a lot of merit in sticking with the commonly found units - Codan and Barrett are about all we ever see in regional areas - most state authorities use the Codan - even in regional towns, there are often retailers with parts and some expertise, if not just basic familiarity, due to all the units the see and service - all I ever hear is good, re these two common brands when they are installed properly and looked after.

I had a fairly minor problem with a Codan auto-tune antenna and could not get the Codan agents in Alice Springs,Albany,Bunbury or Kalgoorlie fix it.Had to wait 'til I got back to Perth.I wouldn't rely on getting your radio fixed in a regional centre they are mostly interested in selling you a new radio.

Hi Brian, as above. Barrett and Codan are the go. Not cheap as chips, but good s/h units are out there.

Although ICOM do manufacture an ' Outback " type radio- you may find the ICOM & Kenwood radios you're looking at on ebay, may in fact, be Amateur equipment. These may not be suitable for( I presume) VKS737 and the like...

The Icom ICF7000 does VKS737 selcals etc and is approved for VKS737 frequencies.

The Icom IC7000 is illegal to use on VKS737 frequencies and does not have selcal, radphone etc

Hi Brian,

I have a mate down here who has a Barrett 550 with an auto tune antenna for sale and he is looking for $1500 for it. He may also have the Barrett software for it for programming the unit.

Let me know if you are interested and I will give u his details

I was looking at that model Codan 9323 and also a Barrett 550.

I am leaning towards the Codan simply because i have not really looked at the Barrett 550 that closely.

I'm sure there are better models but I don't know and have not looked that closely.
