I'm off to Fraser Island next year and need advice as to what type of tent pegs are best for the sand.I've looked at plastic and steel ones of all different lengths, but need your experience to make the right selection.
cheers

G'day,
We used the plastic sand pegs when we were there a few years ago. They were about 18" long from memory. Blew a howling gale one night, we ended up having 16 pegs on the windward side and 4 pegs in the lee. No problems, the tent stayed up, but the tarp over the cooking area was shredded.

are you sure you want to
camp on the sand? there a plenty of firmer
places to pitch a tent.

It's pretty hard to find an alternative ...... seeing as Fraser is the largest SAND island in the world.
Just an FYI.

Hey Chapo
I use metal star pickets, in sand. From memory I think they are 600mm long. Work a treat, they last for years, and you can double them up in almost any type of soil. Can't break them
Best purchased from a Hardware store.

Sorry Chapo
Should have mentioned, you can get those star pickets in many various sizes, not just those ones the "cockies" use.
The concreter's use all different length ones, for their edging, and applications..

Depends.. (doesn't everything ;-)) If you
camp, on the eastern beach in a howling south-
easter you'll need all of Bucky's star pickets and then some. If the weather is mild and you
camp ,in one of the designated
camp grounds then you'll just need a couple of normal steel pegs.
We usually
camp at the Maloo
camp ground just north of
Waddy Point and have never needed anything more than a few 300mm plastic sand pegs.

Wooden tent pegs are the best in sand.

Hi we
camp at
Stockton beach a lot - and we use sand pegs - one advantage of
camping on sand is the surface is soft so easy to get a nice level floor without lumps especially good if you sleep on a thin mattress -
as others have suggested - plastic Spikes are good - the longer the better....
Bring twice the amount you need to use - ie your tent needs 8 -- you take 16 + even better 30
why ?
In very strong winds the single pegs can be ripped out easy as the sand is soft - so put your pegs in with a decent angle away from tent - then put 1 or 2 pegs to cross over the main peg - this will stop it being ripped out easily by wind -- i found this out the hard way -- had wind so strong one night it actually snapped one of those VERY flexible fiberglass poles ...
its also good practice to dig back the dry sand where your going to place the pegs ensuring that your pegs are going into the wet sand just bellow - this sand holds together much better and will provide a better anchor point ... then put a good mound of sand over the pegs .....
this i have learn t from a few years of sand
camping experience ...

We use 4 metal angle iron pegs in the sand to keep our Freedom tent upright and have only had them pull out once when we decided to
camp in the scenic spot instead of going for shelter out of the wind. For side stays you can tie off to buried heavy duty plastic bags filled with sand. (Never pull out)
