Has anyone taken a look at the satellite pics of the Flinders Ranges on Google?

Absolutely spectacular...

Anyone been here? in the range midway between Parachilna and Brachina... if you've been there, drop me an email pls.

Looks like it needs a 2km walk from the nearest track or perhaps 10ks from the road...

Hi Andrew, have you tried Google Maps and switching to Satellite.
I think you get a better resolution. Quite an amazing NP isn't it, will get there one day.

No - I am not a google maps user - does google maps give better resolution in that area. I know that the resolution on google earth varies depending on who's satellite data they bought.

Google maps is part of google search engine, when you go into google to search for a place, you can hit the map button and it will bring up the location, then hit the satellite button and bobs your uncle.

"Google Maps" and "Google Earth" use exactly the same images.......there is no difference in resolution.

thanks for mentioning the alternative option for some......it's good to know about other equal options.

I believe Google Maps has a better search functionality though in a lot of cases.

Not sure what you are looking at, Andrew. I might not have the best GE download though.

The Flinders and environs are fascinating to look at though, and I found some favourite tracks out in th ranges.

Ah - nothing at that spot that can be seen on GE - the detail is lacking, but the big picture is just incredible.

I went there looking for what is there hoping it might be high resolution, but it is quite low, so I can't see it.

Cheers
Andrew.

I have been there (anywhere in the Flinders and I have been there). You can drive through brachina gorge and there are many bushwalks to get out and have a look at everything.

The road you are talking about is the western side of the mountain range, and you can clearly see the eastern side of the range. They are even clearer up close, seeing the slopes of the rocks at each side that would have converged at the top to make a huge range bigger than the Himalayas.

The Flinders are my home.

Andrew,

I have done the Heysen Trail through the area you are talking about, and beyond.

It is an area that will take your breath away, the walking can be quite hard at times, and the scenery is magic.

Driving is only second rate compared to walking this great range.

As Barnsey said, it is our backyard, I have spent many days in this area. As a youngster we were always in the Flinders camping and walking.

Hi there Geoff,

The Heysen is quite a bit further up towards Aroona... I have done it too and have spent a lot of time in the general vacinity... but as I say, have you been there specifically?

Cheers
Andrew.

Andrew, the Heysen is due east of where you are talking, and runs from Cape Jervis to north of Parachilna Gorge.

Where you are referring is a creek called Bathtub Creek, and is right on the edge of the range, but has nothing on topo maps to represent a mine.

To answer your question, no I haven't been to that specific spot.

Geoff.

Interesting formation.
Not been there though :o(

Just checked the landsat images and the NASA SID images and the resolution is worse (at 20 metres per pixel) than Google earth.

I get those co-ords to be 16.35 km south-east of Parachilna township.

can you define what is speccy, & maybe we can confirm. e.g. is it Mt Samuel proper?

Cheers

Yep - from up there, the Flinders (and many other parts of Oz) can look spectacular - the geo formations are amazing from that height - check out the McDonnel Ranges (east and west) - most desert areas are impressive - even around Arrabury - only nature could make those patterns and colours - I'm often blown away by the obvious watercourses seen around some outback towns - not appreciated from the road, but from the satellite you can understand why the early settlers decided to develop there - and why they get horribly flooded in a big wet !
