This is info from the Lonards site. It may help Providing you have a good service history.

http://www.lonards-automotives.com.au/patrol.html

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A FAILURE

If your engine fails, contact your Nissan dealer. If the vehicle is out of warranty they will try and pass the buck but at the sheer cost of these engines don't give up. Put pressure on the dealer and state that these engines are well known for failing. If this doesn't work the next step is to contact Nissan head office. Contact Val Davies on 03 9797 4111 in Melbourne and ask for Customer Assistance. State that you have had a Patrol 3.0 litre engine fail and state that its an ex police vehicle if it is. Tell them that you are well aware that these engines have a history and even though it is out of warranty you would like Nissan to come to some sort of assistance. This is the correct and only procedure to follow. From there, Nissan will introduce their area manager and begin with the process. Try to stay calm as Nissan in Melbourne are fantastic to deal with. Nissan usually fit a short motor brand new to 95% of these vehicles providing there is an impeccable service history. The last one we had was a 10/01 model with 116 000 km. Nissan installed a short motor and the turn around was about 2-3 weeks from start to finish and that was with an unco-operative dealer. Be prepared to pay for incidentals such as hose clips, oil, coolant etc and I think some vehicles have to have the labour paid for. I leave this up to the individual but my opinion is you shouldn't have to pay for labour but on the other hand you are getting a new engine in a vehicle that is out of warranty. We can get into the shoulda woulda coulda debate that Nissan should have done a recall but we won't. For more information try http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Default.asp and do a search. There is plenty of comments from owners good and bad.

what was your email - Ill try and email you our letter of complaint which covered the engine rebuild. Nissan initially was going to cover 50% of the costs and after the letter to Nissan all we paid for was a clutch and a few little bits and pieces oils, clips, hoses etc, about $1000 all up.
