Trying to work out the GPS right (Magellan Explorist 500) and when we attatch the USB cord (is that what its called - the thingy that goes into the computer which is attached to the GPS) it says that it cannt recognise what it is........is this normal and how is it fixed.

It did come with a cd but I think that had to do with registering it etc....Nathan dealt with that bit.....

and also does Discover aus streets and tracks version 2001 go with it.....cannt seem to get it to work...borrowed cd....but this could be due to the computer not recognising it.....

HELP!!!! Any Idea and whats going on????

Oh the CD is probably the installation disc and you need this as it tells the computer to recignise the USB port and GPS.

ALSO READ THE INSTALLATION GUIDE

It might be that your putting a USB 1 cable into a USB 2 port.

Hi Kiwi

I highly recommend you go into Start>Settings>Control Panel and use the 'Add Remove Programs' program to uninstall anything that was installed for the GPS.

Reboot computer

Read the installation guide and follow it's instructions. Generally you will need to install the software first, then connect the device when prompted. Connecting the cable is not sufficient as the computer doesn't recognise it as being anything (its kinda like an extension cable). You will need to plug the GPS into the cable and turn it on.

If that doesn't work try plugging it into another USB port. It shouldn't make a difference which port it is in, but sometimes it does.

If all that doesn't work you will need to wait till the morning and ring the support section of the manufacturer, or whoever you purchesed it from. There may be something wrong with the installation disk or the device itself.

I have had trouble with the explorist 500 and the usb port recognizing it there is a small program called 'gpsportchecker' if you get that from the internet it will find the gps, if every thing else is ok.

Does the GPS work outside and do its locating thing ?

Took me a while to get ours working on the puter.

Keep tryin, or another thought take it around to someone else who has the same, and try to get it working on their puter !

LOL

I had a prob with the cable (Expl400) right from the start but didnt realize till late and had to buy a new one. The fact that the computer can see something it doesnt recognise tells me that the signal is getting through and computer hasnt relevant software.

Maps come on sd cards from the manufacturer/seller. The old ones on cd you can forget.

good luck

I only have a old version of DAST but it has a menu option called Options, GPS Settings. When selectiong that for the 1st time it attempts to locate the GPS (would need the GPS plugged in). have you tried looking in DAST for something similar.

Good luck...I will be watching this thread for the right goodies!
