Good Morning,
I am trying to remove the Decals on the front of the caravan. They have been there for 9 years and are tattered.
I have tried the hair drier to soften them, but too slow. The signs are on the painted dimpled Steel.
Can any one suggest a better removal process?
Cheers Brush

Just ask your local signshop to get you a bottle of vinyl remover !!
Spray it on- let it sit- and off it comes..saves a lot of fingernails..

Hi Signman, I went into Bundy and picked up a 3M 100mm rubber wheel to fit in a drill, that got all the Decals off. I still have the glue residue to deal with. Will the vynell remover shift that and can you suggest a brand.
Brush.

To get the 'goop' off- just use citrus based glue, gunk (call it what you want to) remover. Available at hardware stores/supermarkets.

Try some degreaser or eucalyptus oil. With the degreaser spray it on and well and truly soak it, if its been there that long it will come off, but it'll be a long process. Also use one of the white scourer pads from woolies or coles, they arent as harsh as the green ones on paint. You could also try a sponge stuffed inside one of the swmbo's panty hose too, it works well for getting tar off with degreaser as it doesn't scratch the paint as much either. worth a try, cheers unc

Uncle,

could you please explain how degreaser is going to "soak" into a vinyl decal?

Last I noticed they were sort of , you know, waterproof and are designed to stay on for a very, very long time.

I do that after I've got the sticker off first. My fault , didn't explain myself properly.

Uncle,

thanks for clearing that up. I too want to remove some of mine as I had a hail repair a few years ago and they didn't stick them on as well as the OE. So they are now lifting at the panel joins and breaking up.

Might try the vinyl remover and your idea as well.

Hi .if the base surface is not painted , get CRC Gasket remover and the will just shrivel the vynal and glue and any paint that it gets on. just squirt it off with water or wipe it off.
Will strip back to bare metal or aluminium,
WARNING It is non selective , so dont get any of the spray on painted sufaces as it will remove it.
Have used this for years at work, will take stickers off plastic etc in a flash, ( about 2-3 mins) they just curl up and you can wipe them off.
Cheers Des.

99.99999% of caravan decals are applied to the painted, usually powdercoated aluminium or painted fibreglass panels. So I don't hink it is a good idea.

Howdy Brush,
so far some good advise, also some I would consider to have potential to cause long term and damage beyond repair.
I make my living as a commercial cleaner & admit to not having had to overcome your particular type of problem.
If it were me, I would go buy a 350g pressure pak container of Scotch 3M 700 Adhesive Cleaner & Solvent. It is not cheap at about $20 per container, but is an excellent product.
Spray it on the area concerned & at the same time use your wifes tooth brush to work the chemical into the remaining decal & dimples. The chemical is highly evaporative, so a little at a time.
Take your time ( provided your wife does not want to brush her teeth in a hurry!!) & let the chemical and soft agitation from the brush do the work. I think you will be happy with the damage free result. Best wishes.

have a look at the camec web site or shop. i noticed they sell the stuff to do exactly what you are all talking about at my last visit to the ingleburn outlet only about 3 weeks ago. cannot remember the name, just remember picking up the bottle etc when i saw it. it came with a sharp edge to remove it that guaranteed not to cut or nick your duco etc. good luck
