Hi Chris

Good to hear that your plans are coming together.

I would give my eye teeth(but they no longer exist anyway) to tag along but would need to mortgage the debt free house to do so. I guess I have left my run too late. Will have to stick to remote Aussie adventures.

Cheers

Gidday Chris, Ive been recently watching a program on SBS about these two blokes on motorcycles crossing the same countries. Looks like an awesome adventure, but a lot of hard yakka.

Would be a trip of a lifetime....unfortunately, too many millstones around my neck for me to even fantisize about a trip like this.

Hope all goes to plan.

Cheers...Lionel.

Just a thought:

consider, at least, one of your party obtaining an Amateur Radio licence. It would provide you with worldwide HF facilities and local 146MHz and 450Mhz capability.

A couple of reasons why I suggest this; the HF will provide a safety net for you no matter where you are. The VHF/UHF frequencies will operate on local repeaters (usually up to 100km depending on conditions) and will provide you with local contacts. An English speaking group such as yours would be a real novelty on local Amateur Radio and, without doubt, you would acquire more friendly help than you knew what to do with (Amateurs are very supportive of one-another irrespective of nationality). Additionally once you made VHF/UHF contacts these people would be more than happy to continue HF contact with you as distance increases.

I’m sure you would obtain local knowledge (places to camp, breakdown info etc) with the added bonus of an English translator.

Hi I don't see a date for the trip on the web site.

Don't miss Fri, 1st August 2008 Novosibirsk: Eclipse Day!
You will have the opportunity to experience the total eclipse of the Sun as few people in the world will – from the center of the path in the middle of Siberia! I'll be there.

I now see at the top the trip is in 2009.

Maybe we are lucky because the longest solar eclipse for the next 300 years is in July 22 2009. I'll be there too.

I have been addicted since I saw my first eclipse at Lyndhurst a few years ago. Whent to Libya into the Sahara to see an eclipse in 2005. If you have a chance don't miss it.

The next one in Australia is Cape York 2012.

I saw the 2002 one as well from Ceduna, drove all the way from Perth for 32 seconds of Eclipse. Most awsome thing I've ever seen. I had heard of the 3 day party at Lyndhurst with all the bongo drummers. Maybe I should have gone there.

I'll be there for the Queensland one in 2012 for sure!!

Cheers

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.

Chris you weren't involved in that Peking to Paris trip that was recently on Foxtel and I think the ABC?
The one were they used the antique cars to follow a route done by the same model cars 100 odd years ago?

John, having met Chris and Anne, I think they are a little more organised that that group appeared to be. That is an understatement actually.

It will be a great trip Chris!

Boris,

I have a local Russian tutor, Angelina, who is a great help. As the dates get closer my lessons get harder. Unfortunately my memory is not as good as it was when young. Can I find a spare seat for you, with a name like Boris you could have some good language skills.... Let me know.

Chris, if I win the lotto its the first or second thing I would do. I would like to go around Australia just as much. We as a family are just starting to do short travels here and there in our trusty Prado.
My mother and youngest brother live on a farm in Hmilovka, a port just out of Vladivostock, as do about half of my remaining relatives. They're from Australia but were born in China like thousands of other Russians still living in Australia. They all left Australia about 12 years ago.
My wife Svetlana whos from Russia, has her mother and sister and others living in Volgograd aka Stalingrad aka Tsaritsin. I see you will be passing through both of these places and if you drop in to my mums farm (dacha) she would probably feed you all till you pop.
I was born in Australia never been to Russia speak and write Russian (and a bit of Serbian) as does my 4 yo daughter Kristina. If Angelina or more likely her parents are from China then I've probably met her somewhere. We are all connected through our small Russian Orthodox Churches in the major cities and towns of Australia. My great grandfather was an officer in the Tsars army and was a Godfather to Prince Alexander.
My adventurous younger brother Roman would probably jump at the chance to guide you all around and he is fluent in both Russian and English.
I hope you all prepare accordingly because you will be travelling through places that make the Australian outback look tame. Are you aware of the tigers, bears and monstrous wild boars in the 'Taiga' the largest forest in the world. Around Vladivostock people lose stock and dogs at night and all they see of the tigers is the foot prints in the snow or mud the next morning. It may even pay to purchase a 'Kamaz' a military 4wd truck to take along with you which is already designed for what you are doing, but Im sure you will look into and consider all the options before you go.
Good luck Boris
