My mate wants to buy a Cruiser wagon to tow his 18ft. van, he has a choice between an 4.1 diesel turbo and a V8 petrol on lpg. What would be the most economical fuel wise. LPG is 80cents and diesel is 1.40 around here.

At a rough estimate the Diesel will use 20L/100km and the V8 30L/100km, so the V8 would be a little cheaper to run but not a lot in it.
I'm guessing the V8 would have a lower purchase price.

My v8 Petrol does 22l/100km towing a 17' van.
And that is around the 95km/h mark...and up to 110km/h

BDT,
If the diesel is a late 80Series or a 100 Series or even a 200 Series go the diesel
The running cost and resale along with better fuel economy in the long run will pay for the diesel.
Your mate could also run gas with the diesel.
BTW, I think it should be a 4.2 not a 4.1 diesel.

from the point of view of towing; the diesel has to be a better option not only because of the amount of torque but also the revs at which you can achieve max. IE. Turbo diesel max torque at 1800 revs / petrol v8 max torque at 3400 revs. The lower the revs when under load the less stress on motor resulting in longer trouble free towing. Sometimes short term gains lead to long term expenses.

I would say the Diesel because I'm nervous about Gas going up and Gas doesn't deliver the range of Diesel and in my opinion Gas has slightly higher servicing costs.
Notwithstanding the Diesel model would tow a lot better in my opinion. If you took towing out of the equation and were talking about surburban driving only then perhaps the Gas would be the better choice.?
It's a comparison that one of the 4WD magazines should sink their teeth into and earn their keep..!

Yes it is a comparison the 4WD mags should do, but lately there has been a lot of articles and comparisons that do nothing to help making a choice, and in the end is usually a wishy washy we don't wanna upset someone by saying this product is better so go have another beer and see ya later, sucker!
Price aside, having owned dual fuel and now TDiesel, the safety and convenience of diesel wins it for me.

I have owned by dual fuel vehicles and diesel and around town they are about equal in fuel costs.
On trips the dual fuel becomes more expensive. You do not have the range on LPG that you do on diesel and end up running the vehicle on petrol a lot of the time.

hey,
generally speaking, diesels also have longer lifes, due to their stronger internals - remember they have to be stonger to punch up into the 22:1 compression ratios that are common.
Also, diesel is available everywhere, and a very safe fuel to carry - unlike petrol and LPG.
Any additional purchase cost is balanced again potential resale.
finally, diesels smell nicer...

Easy decision, find a diesel. I have owned a V8 cruiser and it is a brilliant vehicle for power but if your towing diesel is the go. Someone I know owns a V8 cruiser and tows a bushtracker and when he tows he uses the main
tank and subtank which hold about 145 litres and only gets about 450km. Not towing about 650km. I could be wrong but everyone I talk to says LPG is great if you are price conscious but for real economy they wish they had a diesel.
Anyway good luck

Hey,
I work out bush (
papunya NT recently, now western QLD) and honestly, LPG is a joke. If you are heading into the outback, forget LPG, you will be running expensive/volatile petrol. LPG is apparently good in VIC (not sure, never got that far south) but out bush it is non-existent

With all the other advise re:diesel verses petrol you can also add these two points
Mechanics who are trained, and or prepared to work on LPG vehicles are not always available, especially out of town and off the bitumen.
With all the costing don't forget to add the upper cylinder lubricant.
For the last 7 years I have had a Troopy on Petrol and Gas, my next 4WD will be diesel.
Good luck

My recollection of the recent NRMA/RACV?whatever tests was that the TD Landcruiser was more expensive than the petrolV8 to own. i.e. the higher purchase price, servicing costs etc offset the better fuel consumption.
I own a TD because I can be assured of 1200+km of range on standard 180l tanks on a desert trip and I can carry jerry cans without worrying about exploding. If it wasn't for that, I'd drive a petrol vehicle.
