I've just bought one of Michelles Sacks, RacSac RS1.2. It was advertised as using, "#10Chunky YKK Zip", but it has no YKK logo, as is the case with all other YKK zips I've seen. I'm wondering if people with earlier versions of this product zips with "YKK" printed on them. The bottom line for me is that I'm happy to pay the money for a quality product, but am not happy if this is not a YKK as advertised. I've had bad experiences with cheap zips, so I try to only buy YKK products these days.
Regards,
Stuart

So what did Michelle Sacs people say when you contacted them regarding this?

I only bought the RacSac yesterday (Sat, 15th Dec), and sent an email to Michelles Sacs yesterday too. I had a look all over the RacSac, but couldn't find any label indicating where the thing was made (I wonder if there's a legal requirement here?). I only noted the, "Proudly Australian" line on the cardboard box, which doesn't mean a whole lot these days.
I'll be calling them tomorrow to get the story, which I'll post here.

Stuart

OK. I had an email from Michelle at Michelles Sacs, and she said that there had been a number of inquiries about the lack of a, "YKK" logo on the zipper tab. Apparently they had replaced the original YKK tab with a rubber one, having a, "Michelles Sacs" logo. So, it would appear that all is OK in the world.
I'll make further inquiries to see if it's still made in Australia.

Stuart

Oh and she said that due to the concern from various buyers, they're going to go back to the original tab, with the YKK logo. Bloody good idea!

I can be a pedantic bastard, and I've got further suspicions due to the fact that the slider itself has no YKK logo (hopefully others can confirm whether their own RacSacs have a YKK logo on the actual slider?). Will keep pushing...

OK - the final story:
1. In order get the "Michelle Sacs" tab onto the slider, they replaced the original YKK slider with a generic brand, which they were then able to attach their Michelle Sacs tab. Thus, the zip itself is apparently YKK, but with a different slider. While not 100% happy with this modification, they did say that if any issues with the zip, I can return it for repair. So I'm relatively OK with that.
2. In terms of where they'r now made. The canvas is sourced in Australia, but some/all (I didn't clarify that) are being sewn in Thailand. Apparently this is due to a lack of machines or people to operate them here in Australia.
So there you go. And by the way, I did notice that the velcro used is bloody good stuff, so we're on a winner there. Hopefully they'll go back to the original YKK slider and tab.

Stuart

Due to a few concerns, Michelles Sacs are going back to an entire YKK zip. The first shipment is probably not until February.
However, I'm going to return the RacSac, and get a roof top bag made up by
Southern Cross (with a known YKK zip).
This should be the end of the saga.

I just cannot believe it. I picked up the
Southern Cross Roof Bag, and lo and behold - they're no longer using YKK zips!! The zip tab has their own SCC logo, and the slider's not YKK. I've just checked their website, and they don't mention the use of YKK zips, but I'm sure this is a recent change. Plus, they stated, "3 x side zips", but there's only the one which goes all the way around.
The bottom line. Don't believe anything anyone tells you until you actually see the product.

Stuart
