G`day People,
Can anyone please tell me a method of removing fully cured (old) silicon sealant from the surface of my C/van without damaging the paint or the ripple surface. I have asked at c/van repairers and other than scraping it they didn`t know. Is there any solvent that will remove it , not just from my c/van but anywhere ?

Thanks,
Scrubcat.

Sometimes some kero works.
Rub it on with a wrag and use a plastic scraper.

Scrubcat,

I can't comment on the effectiveness as I haven't used it but here's a link for "silicone remover" a Selleys product.

a good product to use but can be a little tricky to get hold of is a liquid that goes by the code of K9-P

ask around for it, i am sure someone will point you in the right direction

Ah Willem,

You may be getting on but the mind still works.

I belive you gt it by Siliconing either a thimble or a bucket between the rear end , just depends on the size of the dog.

Something that does work is CO contact cleaner, cut the silicon back as much as possible using a plastic scrapper then wet a rag with the CO and start rubbing, it attacks the silicon though you have to keep replacing the rag.

The way that I have found to work on our van and removing silicon from car as I use it every day is to put plenty of turps on a rag wipe over the silicone quite a number of times and then use some sort of plastic scraper and scrape the silicon off you will need to keep applying turps as it softens the silicon.

Liquid Nitrogen does the trick...spray onto silicone, it freezes, and then a gentle levering and it snaps off clean. Wonderful in removing chewing gum.
But getting the Nitrogen is the hard part.

Scrubcat,
Citra Clean, I've used this on several occasions seems to work ok. Not sure what's in this stuff (apart from the obvious) but it works on heaps of things. I used it to clean that contact adhesive from the bottom of my roller drawers the other day, worked a treat, I'd almost given up and was just about to break out the scrapers.
Keep the shiny side up

Thank you, Thank you,
Thanks everyone for your responses, I now have some more products and methods to try on what has been an annoying and difficult problem.
I don`t know about K9 Pee, as a solvent but I do know it kills patches of my back lawn. LOL.

Thanks again everyone.

Have just had the same problem.Found that a piece of perspex with the end ground like a wood chisel worked well on my caravan to get rid of the buckets of silicone that the previous owner had applied.and it did not scratch the paint.Turps removed what is left.mongrel of a job at best.!

I've not used this product, but came across it recently when I was looking for a means of removing silicon myself.
