Goods question! I guess if they have owned it for 5 years or more you would be safe.

There is no way of finding out.
If you are wary, get the vendor to complete a Statuatory Declaration stating that he has full & clear title to the van/trailer & the power to pass the title on to the purchaser.
I am a yacht broker & that is what we do to reassure our purchasers.

in Wa there is a "revs"....registar of encumbered vehicles...if the vehicle is licensed then a search will tell you...internet or phone enquiry...costs $5 to get a certificate...whatever state you are in I am sure there would be a similar registration

ps forgot to add I have used it for vehicles, trailers and a boat...dont see why a caravan would be any different...if the van is not licensed may be more difficult perhaps

SA has a similar system, Vehicle Rego office has an affiliated gov organisation that confirms whether any money is owing (and who to) on the vehicle/bike/van. However I would insure that I received a hard copy of the confirmation just in case.

I understand if you have the hard copy showing the previous owner had clear title and someone pops up saying the previous owner did not own the unit outright and you owed them money, or the vehicle/van, you can tell them to buzz off, because they should have registered their claim over the vehicle/van.

Victoria has a vehicles Security register operates as per previous comments (you can ring to check or buy a certificate) Have never checked to see if it covers registered vans but assume so.
You could also ask the seller if he has back issues of the registration certificates as well as the current one.

Definitely check REVS but also check with Police Stolen Vehicle register as sometimes they do not share their information (they are both Public Service organisations).
