The Kia Sorento is one of those vehicles that are slipping in under the radar of many of the major manufacturers.
Value for money wise they are a good honest vehicle with quite good build quality and finish.
We have a 2006 run out model since Feb this year which is the 3.5L V6 auto. Basically it is the SWMBO shopping trolly but it does get taken bush and handles off road conditions very
well. The original
suspension is a bit average and the original tyres are crap as with most new 4x4's. Our's went in for some upgrades straight off the transporter, with Old Man Emu
suspension upgrade (40mm lift over standard) and a set of BFG All Terrains. The 3.5 is a punchy power plant but a little thirsty as most petrol 4x4's are. 2007 sorento's changed from the 3.5L, to 3.8L and 3.3.
The 2.5L Turbo Diesel was released in Aust earlier this year and would probably be the best choice to power/economy. Also the base diesel is the only option for a 5 speed manual. 2007 models also went from a 2300kg tow weight rating to a 2800kg.
Head down to a Kia dealer and take one for a spin along with other brand contenders

Hi ccrander,
I can vouch for the Kia, we picked up ours in early 2005 3.5lt 5speed auto, & put pedder 50mm lift coils all-round & koni adjustable shocks & a set of BF all terrains, since then it has been hammered to hell & back with a 1000kg camper trailer & has not hesitated on any of the tracks we would previously put our jackaroo or Landcruiser up. The vehicles reliability has been second to none with the only issue being a mod to the auto transmission wiring harness to stop a hesitation & a faulty central locking door actuator. It has been by far the most bang for $ 4wd we have owned in 20yrs & service costs are realistic. I cannot speak highly enough of it providing you can live with the following.
1. The 3.5 is a spirited engine but if you use it the fuel consumption reflects that, however on out recent trip up the center & around over 9,000km with 4 on board & camper trailer in tow we averaged 17.8lt/100.
2. If you put a rear cage in, the cargo area shrinks down, & is not really suitable for a family
camping trip without a trailer in tow.
3. The great KIA non believers & knockers that you will have to deal with out there even thou they will have never driven one or looked at the build.
I think the new 2.5CRD would be
well worth the look & factor in a $1000 to upgrade the
suspension & they are a great unit to drive around.
Cheers Simon.
