Hi all,

I am in the process of gaining all the required permits for our trip along the Canning Stock Route next year. I actually have had a very pleasant experience gaining permits from the Central Land Council (http://www.clc.org.au/permits/) and Western Australian Govt’s DEPT of Indigenous affairs (http://www.dia.wa.gov.au/Land/Permits/). The web based systems they utilise are very fast and I had permits within minutes. These transit permits are obviousy free.

I was then a little confused when I found that the ANFWDC were charging a $50 fee for the entry permit for the CSR (from wells 5 to 40). Is this fee purely a very expensive admin cost or a fund raising activity for the ANFWDC? With 6 vehicles in our group that is $300. That money could be used buying a litre of Diesel these days (yeah,a slight exaggeration, but it is getting close up here at the moment).

Does anyone have any insight into this $50 fee. When you end up saving $5000 plus for a trip like this, another $50 is just another couple of hours overtime.

Cheers all and have a merry x-mas.

Dave

Not really convinced about the need for this fee to travel the CSR as such. But it is said that you need a permit to visit Durba Hills.

We were on the Canning in August this year without a permit, and so were most of the other travellers that we spoke to.
We camped at Durba for 5 days, and no one ask if we had a permit to be there. Also spoke to one of the Elders from Giggalong?, who was there assisting a CALM group doing a survey between Wells 13 - 23. No mention of a permit required.

Keep an eye on the events that may unfold about this subject.

Regards Tony. (Well 55)

The Canning is a gazetted Stock Route, and I believe this still enables Public Right Of Navigation within the declared Crown reserve (five mile width).

I'm not sure how "Exclusive Possession" overrides this basic principle at Law, but it would appear to me that you have a legal right to travel the Canning providing you don't enter into areas of Native Title without permission..

If I'm wrong some fella will let me know on this site.

Have a good Christmas

Kim

You are pretty much on the money there, Kim

Permit is required to visit Calvert Ranges, Durba and other places. Not sure who is policing this. ANFWDC is getting a nice little earner for their paperwork imput. I am pleased I have been there and done that that as far as the CSR goes.

Have a nice festive season.

Cheers

Have a good you cranky old bugger. Might meet you in the bush some time....

Best wishes to you and your own.

PS Have you given any thought to upsetting old Henry Ward out of Genayle Station? for an Exporoz get together. The old fart would carry on like a pork chop!!!

Hi Dave and Shelley
I seem to recall a group fee??? - don't know at what numbers that becomes economic.
Many people this year seemed unaware of change. Looks like a nice little money spinner for access to what is a corridor (ie you can't do many side trips legally).

Happy travels

I must agree that your pictures are very good. Do you take photo's as a sideline. What type of camera do you use. Once again great pics. As for the money for the permit, yeah, nice little earner for the ANFWDC. I don't mind paying a permit fee but $50 on top of everything else is just sad. THe fuel costs are going to be HUGE!!!!!!! as it is. I really think if I don't get a lot of these big trips out of the way now, then I will never be able to afford them.

Cheers mate

HI Mick, Dave and Shell

I've been taking phots for a while won a Honeywell calendar thingie once but it's just a quiet hobby. I started using a Canon 400D with standard lens this year. Standard lens however does not allow fast enough shutter speeds in poor light. So have now fitted an old favourite lens -much larger and heavier.- but alas haven't been out to play with it.

The new CSR pass lists all the places you CAN'T go - there are lots - including Calvert Ranges..

Cheers
