Guys,
It's those bloody little elves (you know, the ones that dash along the telephone lines carrying messages to and from everyone).

Now that Kevin 07 is going to rip up their AWA's, the Elves Union is ordering them to work to rules, (only 1 message at a time, no overtime and proper meal breaks including smoko's).

It's getting close to Christmas and the workload is increasing too.
This is why messages, posts and threads are taking soo long.
The poor little sods are exhausted.
Please be patient with them.

Happy Christmas to All on this forum.

Disco.

I have also noticed that.

I have 2 computers here and only yesterday I completely reformatted and reloaded everything back onto my laptop because it was just loaded down with crap accumulated over the last 12 months, and even after doing that, Exploroz is still just as slow as before.

Other websites are just fine, it just seems to be this one. I have tried with IE 6, IE 7 and Firefox, so the type of browser used has made no difference to me.

The funny part is that I have an old Celeron 400 with Windows 98 and not much else on it and it loads Exploroz quicker than my laptop which is a rocket compared to the celeron.

Is your issue really all the time? If it is all the time then I wonder what connectivity you are using as I get pages in milliseconds most of the time. It is not my proximity to the server as it is all hosted in Qld. So testing in Perth should give me the worst look at the system performance. Coupled with 4-5 staff in the office hitting ExplorOz all day. So I am just trying to work out the issue.

Maybe contact me directly and we can do some testing to see what may be causing any issue.

The server error is typically me (see my response at the end of this post) however you should not see too many of these. Again new server should hopefully resolve most of these issues.

Nothing slow to load here. Can I suggest if anyone has an issue with the site it's best looking up to your right in "About Us", then either click on "Conact Us" or "Feedback". That way Dave & the team will have some history of any problems then would be in a better position to do something about it :-)

John,

How slow are you taking and compared to what please. I cannot understand (hence cannot fix) I get pages fully loaded as fast as anything (and spend a lot of time and money to ensure this is the case). We have 5 staff on the site from our office connected via ADSL 1+ around 8MB in Perth using the site hosted in Brisbance and we all get sub second page _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx most of the time. There are some issues and when it does go funny it takes about 30secs to get itself back on track however it then typicaly runs perfectly for a few hours before the next little issue comes along.

So any feedback on this issue would be great as it may help me to find an issue. What connection do you have to the Internet? Dial-up, ADSL 1 or 2, wireless etc. It may help me to understand. Also can you tell me if it is a specific page (thread view, or index or other) or all pages.

G'day David

For the past few weeks the initial loading time for the site has been around 60-90 secs. Once the site is open the move say to the Forum page takes 2-3 secs. Right now, after several into and out-of-the-site moves, the loading time is significantly reduced - less than 10 secs. We have a cable broadband connection that carries phone and TV (Transact).

Our homepage (ABC) takes about 2-3 secs to load, and that would be about the average time for say getting Google results, and for other Favourites.

The only other site that takes a while to load is Qantas and in my technophobic ignorance, I have always assumed that that is due to the number of users.

I note your latest posting re digital maps loading. If that is not running now, then that has made a significant difference.

The site is always worth waiting for.

Regards

Just yell if you have enough info on this Thread. For me, starting at 0930 EST, the site is taking around 45 secs to load (did it 3x to check).

Other sites are all less than 10 secs.

Cheers

John, It is very weird - I opened it forst time for the day and had the fullo home page in less than 4 seconds. Then closed all browsers and opened directly to the forum a min or two later had the whole page in a few seconds again. I have never had to wait for 45 seconds, in fact I have not seen more than 10 seconds load for months and months. I am really confused about this now. What browser are you using? Do you have some Internet Security program running, which one? If Internet Explorer what is the setting in Tools - Internet Options - General - Bowsing History - Settings - Temporary Internet Files?

As mentioned I get sub 5 second response all day every day for myself and all my staff. I also log onto various customer networks around the country and get the same type of results so I am very confused to read posts with this duration. If I can see it browken then I would have some clue to fix it. I do not want to sit here and know there are issues I cannot replicate because my intention is as always to fix it. So I need to try to work out what, what when and where and hope I can duplicate.

I also wonder if it may be a state related issue in weather feeds or something becuase I just cannot see it.

G'day again David

Security / virus program is Norton's 360

Tools settings
For Temporary Internet Files
Check for new versions of stoted pages is set to "automatically"
Amount of disk space to be used is set at 2384MB

For History
Days to keep pages in History is set at 20

Appreciate your concern. I can cope with the slowness for the exploroz page. Initially I had assumed it was something at my end, and I only responded when it became obvious that others experienced the same slowness.

No problems - I have only about 10 users with issues out of over 10,000 per day so I still suspect a client setting or ISP based issue but I want to work through them all if I can to see if we can get a resolution.

Now from an initial view I would recommend you reduce the Disk Space down significantly - there is a documented MS issue with size of temp files and the current recommendation is less than 250MB. I run 250 and would suggest 250 or even less. So if you would not mind could you adjust setting, then cleat out the cache completely, close IE and open again and this and let me know the result. I really think this could make a difference not only to ExplorOz but all over the place. And can almost guarantee it if your machine is not newish (ie: less than 6 months old).

Anyway have a go then open ExplorOz and close the browser and open again. Of course after clear the temp files the first open on everything will be a little slower but cache will quickly catch up. Let me know.

John,

Ok so that means that page to page is fast and only the initial page load is slower. Can I also ask what connection you are using to the Internet and the ISP. If broadband do you know th espeed ie: 256/64 or 512/128 or whatever. If dial-up can you tell em the connection speed of the modem (just check the connection status and it should show you the speed).

Thanks.

As per some of the replies please let me know directly on these issues. We are currently building a new 4 processor server system and new dual cpu database server to host the ExplorOz system and these will be up and running in the next few days. I actually expect the call today from the hosting company to say the gear is ready.

As for running slow - I have not seen this however the thread aborts do occur and usually when I am uploading new/updated code. This is not always the case and some times one the the worker processes is crashing (however I cannot work out why).

As for thousands of ads this is not true in fact the forum is running 80% less ads than ever so I do not get that comment. If you are a member with Ad suppress then you will only see about 1 ad per page in the header position.

However having said all this I really need the feedback directly as it may be caused by something I have just loaded in the background, it may have a problem. Also I need to know if it is all pages, forum index, forum thread, home, trader or other. Each of these pages runs there own code and accesses different databases. Again however we are about to switch to a new series of machines so lets see how this goes in the next few days, if I can get it converted before xmas (with lack of resources to manage problems (both in my office and hosting company).

MN1 and Others,

Just having a chat to Damian in the office trying to work out what has changed or been done over the last few weeks and it dawned on us that we have been almost full time importing digital mapping data and running all sorts of analysis tools on it to build the new Treknotes that we are publishing. Some of the tasks that Damian runs are very intensive data anaylsys functions and these certainly can effect the system. I found out that these processes have been run several times per day every day for the last few weeks. This maybe part of the problem and we will monitor what goes on and see.

In any case the new servers should solve it. I will keep you posted on the progress.

BTW: The system can take longer to draw a thread after you do an update (as you have noticed). This is by design and is part of the system caching that I have designed. It will take longer if the thread has lots of replies and followups.

The reason for this is that when you update a thread (either by Reply or Followup) the system deletes the cached disk copy of the thread and then rebuilds it to add the newest (your) update to be loaded into the disk cache. It takes this time as this is when the system replaces hyperlinks and looks for keyword replacements - it does this one by one for each reply/followup (hence it takes longer if there are more). Once this update is done subsequent reads of the thread will use the cache again and hence will perform better.

I hope this make sense however this is the reason it can take a little longer to accept a reply/followup on a long thread. The new system should do this faster and there maybe a method I can adopt to speed it up. I will investgate this in due course.

Now I'm about to settle down and live in a house with a tiled roof and 240v electricity I've changed the 'logo' to a pic taken at Shady Camp in Kakadu, just a sample of what I expect to catch here in Busselton.

They say "a picture's worth a thousand words" there could be something in that, so maybe in future when I look at the profile logo/pictures will I will see the 'owner' as he sees himself . . and I will now be a 'big' fish catcher L0L

The hippee has retired . . . . . .
Yes, 'all household appliances come in white' - now I need them in 240v and blonde too :-)))
