Christmas Poem

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE, MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY, WITH PRESENTS
TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO,IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH
SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES, OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT, CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND
DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE
CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED
UP ON THE FLOOR, IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED, AN AUSTRALIAN SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED
UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES, THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS, WHO WERE WILLING TO
FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM, EACH MONTH OF THE
YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER, HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON
A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT, A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED
TO MY KNEES, AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED, AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA, DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT
FOR FREEDOM; I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY
COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND
PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, ITS CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL
IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD
NIGHT."

This poem was written by an Australian Peacekeeping
soldier stationed overseas. The following is his request.
I think it is reasonable.

Would you do me the kind favour of sending this
to as many people as you can?

Christmas will be coming soon and some credit
is due to our all of the servicemen and women for our
Being able to celebrate these festivities.

Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit
of what we owe.

Make people stop and think of our heroes, living
and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.
-------------------------------------------------------
And A Merry Christmas to you all from
Me and Dusty

I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly.

The original was penned by Cmdr.Donald M DeWITT, USN Retired.

Hi Doug
You are so right, if it wasnt for these men and women, current and
in the past, we wouldnt have a life style like we have, but I wonder
what the future holds, if we cant carry on our Australian traditions
and the culture of our native Australians, fearing that we might upset
new commers .

MERRY CHRISTMAS MATE

Sorry Doug, but I don't see it that way.

Sentimental rubbish!

Nobody owes anybody anything.

But you have a good festive season anyway

Cheers

No Richard speaking from experience...15 years service but that doest mean anything compared to what the earlier soldiers endured.

Glad we can count on you for an intelligent post.....not!

Good day.....(just be thankful that it wasnt Guten Tag!!

Matt

I think that those speaking Guten Tag are now a far more advanced society than we are here in the antipodes. It may be best not to slight those who live there.

Politicians wage wars. Soldiers are just their tools.

I am amazed at the many people who contribute to this forum who hold dearly to the saying " What if " You cannot dwell in the past but you may only learn from mistakes made. Unfortunately we seldom apply what we have learned from history.

I reiterate that no one owes anything to anybody. Life is just what it is and that is 'What you make of it for yourself'

While not directed at you, apart from it being in your replies....

I dont believe I live in the past but I am very respectful of it, and those that dont...are doomed to relive it...as the saying goes.

Oh and while it wasnt a slight on the Germans behalf just a fact...we speak English here because of the involvement of the Australians Soldiers as allies against their atrocities.

I will always be in debt to their sacrifice.

Being advanced does not make amends.... Only actions can do that...not technology.

All the best and Merry Christmas Willem.

credit where credits due Doug.....plain and simple.

I thought a "thanks for the correction" wouldn't be out of order every now and then.

Cheer up, it's Christmas. :-)

No offense meant mate. Just pointing out where it originally came from...

As I said I totally agree with the sentiment. If you hadn't posted it I probably would have.

Merry Christmas..

Don't "take it off" Doug. I have never served our country but I have a deep respect for those that have.
Who gives a stuff if a minority think it's rubbish or who penned it.
Regardless of what country, enemy or foe, a fallen soldier was a son or a brother or husband or father to someone.
Your post gave us all an opportunity to reflect on their sacrifice for us.
Thanks for doing so & best wishes.

here's another one...i have broad shoulders so can take the critisim guys

Santa’s Tired & …
‘Twas the night before Christmas - old Santa was bleep .
He cussed out the elves and threw down his list,
Miserable brats, ungrateful jerks,
I’ve a good mind to scrap the whole damn works.
I've busted my ass for damn near a year,
Instead of "Thanks Santa" - what do I hear?
My old lady bitches ‘cos I work late at night,
The elves want more money and the reindeer all fight.
Rudolph got drunk and goosed up the maids,
Donner is pregnant and Vixen has AIDS.
And just when I thought that things might get better,
Those assholes from Tax sent me a letter.
They say I owe taxes - if that ain't damn funny;
Who the hell ever sent Santa Claus money?
And the children these days - they all are the pits
Ask the impossible, the mean little bleep s.
Spent a whole year makin’ wagons and sleds,
Assembling their dolls - arms, legs and heads.
Made lots of yo yos, but no-one wants them,
Just computers and robots – like I'm IBM?
If you think all that's bad, just picture this:
Try holding those brats, their pants smell of bleep
They pull on my nose, they grab at my beard,
And if I don't smile, their mums think I'm weird.
Here I’m flyin’ along, dodging the trees,
Falling down chimneys and skinning my knees.
I'm quitting this job, there's just no enjoyment.
I'll sit on my fat ass and draw unemployment.
So Christmas is OFF - now you know the reason.
Found me a blonde; I'm going SOUTH for the season!
I'll laze in the sun, then into bed I’ll be tucked
And those snotty-nosed brats … can go and get f…ed.
